Commanders fans should pump the brakes on Brandon Aiyuk deadline hype

June 1 might not matter at all in this instance.

The Washington Commanders are caught in the crosshairs of Brandon Aiyuk's drama with the San Francisco 49ers. Speculation remains rampant, and all sides seem dug into their respective stances. And despite speculation by some in the media, the upcoming June 1 date might not mean much in the grand scheme of things.

June 1 is significant in NFL circles. It's the cut-off point at which dead money can be split between the 2026 and 2027 seasons, rather than all going onto the 2026 cap. This typically makes it easier for teams to absorb the costs of high-profile departures, as we've seen in recent years with players like Russell Wilson.

But here's why it's insignificant in this predicament.

If the Niners were intent on releasing Aiyuk, they could have designated his departure at any stage this offseason as a post-June 1 release. This would have removed this distracting problem from their hands and allowed another team, potentially the Commanders, to make an approach.

Instead, the Niners are holding firm.

They know Aiyuk's time with the club is done. They have also been hurt enough to wait, hoping that the Commanders or another interested suitor will come forward with a trade offer. And at this point, general manager John Lynch would probably accept anything.

Aiyuk has missed a lot of football with a serious knee injury. He hasn't played since midway through the 2024 season. Though the Niners are not without blame in this saga, the former Arizona State standout hasn't exactly covered himself in glory either. And according to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, he is refusing to speak to other teams about reworking his contract.

Realistically, the Niners probably know that a trade partner won't be found. But until Aiyuk's roster bonus is due just before the 2026 season begins, they have every right to hold onto him and hope someone is desperate enough to take the pass-catcher off their hands over the summer.

Again, it seems unlikely, but there is a lot of bitterness and emotion impacting decisions in this situation.

The Commanders are reportedly looking for another productive receiver. Peters is not planning to trade for Aiyuk. The Niners and Washington know where he wants to go, and the front-office leader is supposedly warming to the possibility after a positive reference from quarterback Jayden Daniels. Lynch and Kyle Shanahan are making things difficult, making this a waiting game with no definitive timeline for a conclusion right now.

Of course, the Niners could cause a surprise by releasing Aiyuk, finally admitting defeat, after the June 1 date. The Commanders could also alter their stance by throwing a 2028 seventh-round pick to San Francisco in a trade.

But it seems impossible to say for sure.

Washington also has other potential targets. Stefon Diggs is intrigued by the possibility of a homecoming, but there's been no movement on the Commanders' end, at least not publicly. New possibilities might also be available when post-June 1 cuts begin. Aiyuk's cloud lingers, but that shouldn't prevent Peters from identifying additional reinforcements in the meantime.

It's frustrating, of course. But anyone expecting an instant resolution after June 1 will be out of luck.

Things have gone way too far for that.
