There is significant debate around wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk right now. He is waging all-out war on everybody, and nobody is seemingly safe. The wide receiver wants to join the Washington Commanders, but opinions are divided on that contentious issue.
Aiyuk is striking back. He feels like his name has been disrespected in recent months as his bitter feud with the San Francisco 49ers escalated. While it would probably be best to stay quiet and wait for things to play out, the pass-catcher's frustrations have gotten the better of him.
One Niners insider doesn't think Aiyuk landing in Washington is a slam dunk by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, he wondered whether the former Arizona State playmaker had played his final snap in the league.
49ers insider casts doubt on Brandon Aiyuk's potential Commanders switch
Matt Maiocco from NBC Sports thought Aiyuk might be getting ahead of himself by proclaiming the Commanders will be his next stop. It's possible, given his connection to quarterback Jayden Daniels, but the insider found it hard to believe that general manager Adam Peters was going to make a strong push for the wideout.
“He’s talking about the day the 49ers release him, he’ll be signing with the Commanders the next day. I just can’t imagine them going all in for Brandon and for him to say he will sign with the Commanders, is he just speculating because one of his very good friends, Jayden Daniels, is the quarterback of the Commanders? I don’t know. I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility or out of the question that Brandon Aiyuk has played his final NFL game.”
It's an interesting take. And it's certainly possible.
The Commanders are probably keeping a close eye on developments from afar. What they make of Aiyuk's social media activity remains to be seen, but until the Niners cut the cord, it's a guessing game.
Peters has not forced the issue with a trade offer. That was the right call, even if it means Aiyuk could join a little later in the process if the Commanders are keen. Having a strong relationship with Daniels is one thing, but the risks attached are something else entirely.
The whole soap opera, which seems to take a different turn every day, has become tedious. Everyone knows what the outcome will be; it's just a matter of when. The Niners are playing hardball with Aiyuk, and that's unlikely to change after his public outbursts. Until then, the Commanders will not show their hand, even as information is potentially being acquired behind the scenes in preparation for a final decision.
It's hard to believe another team will gamble on Aiyuk. This means Washington might be his final hope on a road to redemption. But until something becomes official, banking on this being a foregone conclusion is foolish.
Fans are waiting for further developments. But they might be waiting for a while yet.
