It's been another week of drama around wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and the San Francisco 49ers. The Washington Commanders are caught in the storm, with the pass-catcher wearing a team hat and putting his location as D.C. during another Instagram post. But until the NFC West club decides to pull the plug, nothing much has really changed.
There are differing opinions on Aiyuk. Some fans believe reuniting with quarterback Jayden Daniels can be the spark that reignites his career. Others want the Commanders to explore other targets, claiming this could be a distraction Washington doesn't need right now.
The truth lies somewhere in the middle. But the question about what sort of contribution Aiyuk would or wouldn't make is a valid one.
Just how much would Brandon Aiyuk be able to help the Commanders?
At the peak of his powers, Aiyuk would be a significant addition to the Commanders. He looked on course for legitimate superstardom in 2023, turning in a sensational campaign that deserved a lucrative financial commitment. But aside from the soap opera his situation with the Niners has become, it's also worth remembering that he has not played a down of regular-season football since midway through the 2024 campaign.
That is a long time. And it could be a stumbling block.
Nobody knows for sure how healthy Aiyuk is. He was running sharp enough routes on the field before San Francisco games, but doing the same in a regular-season environment is something else entirely. A serious knee injury dented his momentum, and given he's been rehabbing it away from his current employers, it's difficult to gauge how far along he is.
The Commanders would probably bring him along gradually if Aiyuk does eventually make his way to the club, which remains the likeliest scenario. Nobody should be expecting miracles from the former Arizona State star right away. There is also confidence in the young wideouts behind Terry McLaurin on the depth chart to step up their consistency within David Blough's schematic concepts.
That would take some of the heat off Aiyuk initially. But for now, there are simply too many unknowns to suggest he's capable of reaching Pro Bowl-caliber standards again.
Of course, this could change quickly. Aiyuk is desperate for a fresh start. He's got previous chemistry with Daniels, a close friend. According to reports, he only wants Washington, so if this does become a reality at some stage, he'll do everything he can to stay.
Aiyuk may be fully ready to hit the ground running. He might not ever get back to the player he once was. But all signs still point to the Commanders finding out one way or another.
Just when that'll be is the big question nobody knows the answer to right now.
