Uncertainty surrounds the Washington Commanders' wide receiver room. Brandon Aiyuk's potential arrival looms large, but there is no doubt about the one constant.
It's Terry McLaurin, and he is taking the responsibility very seriously this offseason.
McLaurin's 2025 campaign didn't go according to plan. He spent a lot of time on the shelf for the first time in his professional career. This came after a long contract standoff over the summer that hindered his ability to hit the ground running. Washington's playoff aspirations capitulated early, and by the time he got back to something like 100 percent, the damage was irreparable.
Terry McLaurin is setting the tone, and Commanders teammates are obliged to follow
The former Ohio State star is looking to make a different statement this time around. McLaurin is leading from the front, setting an example for others to follow. Wes Welker, the Commanders' offensive assistant who knows a thing or two about the receiver spot, made this abundantly clear.
Welker can see how McLaurin inspires those around him. He sees how hard he's working and how much he's leading. He's the alpha in Washington's receiver room, and he knows it.
"He's been nothing but great. The way he works, the way he goes after it, and the mentality he brings day after day, has really set the tone for our whole offense. We're going to need his veteran leadership. I think he knows that, and the way he's been bringing it has been really cool to see."
This is encouraging. For all the questions about others alongside McLaurin on the depth chart, the Commanders will go as far as the second-team All-Pro takes them.
Aiyuk might come, but how much can he help? Stefon Diggs could arrive at some stage, but he would be playing second fiddle to McLaurin. That is how good he is, and that's how important he is to Washington's offensive progression under new coordinator David Blough.
Welker isn't the only one who sees a different look in McLaurin's eyes.
The Commanders are getting precisely what they need. Staying healthy is key. That also goes for quarterback Jayden Daniels, as the dynamic duo was barely on the field together last season. And when your franchise cornerstone is setting this sort of tone, others are almost obliged to follow on the same path.
Everyone has turned the page from last season's disaster. It remains a precarious situation amid all the offseason optimism, but if McLaurin keeps this mindset up and it continues to envelop the entire locker room, the Commanders will be in pretty good shape.
