Commanders rookie hype takes off after eye-opening seal of approval

The praise keeps coming for Antonio Williams, but this means more than most.

Antonio Williams has left his mark quickly on the Washington Commanders. He passed all the early tests and transitioned well into a professional setting. It'll be interesting to see if the wide receiver can keep this up, but things couldn't be going much better right now.

And it's caught the attention of one team legend who just so happened to play the same position with great effect.

Williams came highly recommended. He may have had a down year at Clemson in 2025, but there were mitigating circumstances attached. Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney believes he has the tools to become a difference-maker at the next level, putting him right up there with any wideout he's ever coached. High praise indeed, but his early integration into Washington's culture backs up these claims.

Santana Moss raises excitement for Commanders rookie Antonio Williams in Year 1

The No. 71 overall selection in the 2026 NFL Draft caught the eye at Washington's mandatory minicamp. According to former wide receiver Santana Moss, Williams did the same at organized team activities, and he's excited to see what he could bring alongside Terry McLaurin next season.

"A-Dub (Antonio Williams) is looking like he's primed to be one of those breakout rookies. Let's see what 14 does alongside a guy like Terry McLaurin and Dyami Brown."

Moss isn't alone in his opinion. Coaches and teammates have spoken extremely highly of Williams. His on-field work needs no introduction, but his behind-the-scenes application is also gaining instant respect. That's always the hardest part for any rookie, so it's a testament to his mindset and willingness to go above the typical call of duty to speed up his learning curve.

The Commanders need someone to step up in their receiver room. McLaurin is the only one with legitimate production over a consistent period. Most others are young upstarts and relatively unknown quantities. There's hope they can break out, but the lingering speculation around Brandon Aiyuk's potential arrival at some stage is there for a reason.

Expecting Williams to become the second coming of rookie Randy Moss is unrealistic. But if he can continue to display his sharp route running, ability to generate yards after the catch, and smooth body control, he's more than capable of earning his fair share of targets.

Momentum is on Williams' side. This is just the first step, but standing out now will serve him well when the pads go on at training camp.

The Commanders will likely learn more about Williams during joint practices and the preseason. He's ticked every box so far, and if Moss thinks he's got a bright rookie outlook, you can bet those in the building are thinking exactly the same thing.

With growing hype comes increased expectations. Hopefully, Williams can provide the spark Washington's offense desperately needs.
