The Washington Commanders are reportedly looking for another veteran wide receiver to boost their chances of bouncing back next season. Brandon Aiyuk and Stefon Diggs are the hot names in speculation, but nothing concrete has emerged from the club as yet.
General manager Adam Peters is weighing his options. However, the Commanders may have an answer hiding in plain sight.
Antonio Williams was completely overlooked until the Commanders ended his slide at No. 71 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft. This was somewhat surprising, especially considering he was touted as a potential top-15 pick before his final college campaign at Clemson. But everything happens for a reason.
Commanders are seeing some good early returns from rookie Antonio Williams
Williams is in the best place to grow and potentially get a decent amount of targets immediately. Based on his early impression, the Commanders may have a possible steal on their hands.
Reports have been glowing. Williams caught the eye at Washington's rookie minicamp, and the same trend is continuing at organized team activities. One only has to look at how veteran backup quarterback Marcus Mariota lit up when talking about the first-year wideout to see what sort of positive impact he's made in a short timeframe.

On Antonio, Marcus said, "He's like a sponge. He's trying to learn as much as he can. He has a great feel for his routes...he has a pretty solid foundation in that." pic.twitter.com/eiH0C2WZfj
Tempering expectations initially would be wise. Williams still needs time to get up to speed in the NFL. He needs to find his groove, and it'll be a gradual process. At the same time, his sharp route-running and ability to get his body moving quickly after the catch are good places to start.
Hype is obviously growing around Williams. He was tabbed as a slot specialist in college, and he might be that in the pros. However, his inside-out versatility is something the Commanders are looking to put to good use in David Blough's scheme. It's early days, but it's starting to look like he may have a shot of becoming a WR2 or WR3 in this offense, depending on another new arrival joining the fold.
Even if Aiyuk or Diggs, or potentially both, arrive in Washington, that shouldn't change Williams' outlook all that much. He's a possession receiver who gets open quickly. But unlike some of the other wideouts vying for prominent positions, he's got the vision and creativity to create something out of nothing.
That matters.
There is a long way to go and some tough summer challenges to overcome before Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles, but Williams couldn't have done much more to leave an early mark.
Hopefully, this continues for a long time.
