It's been difficult to ignore the hype around Antonio Williams since the Washington Commanders selected the gifted wide receiver at No. 71 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft.

And the buzz shows no signs of slowing down just yet.

Williams may have waited a little longer to hear his name called, but he could potentially have landed in the best possible place for immediate involvement. Based on reports emanating from the first day of Washington's organized team activities, he's got a tremendous chance.

Commanders rookie Antonio Williams is off to a great start at OTAs

According to those in attendance, it was a strong first day from Williams. The Clemson product caught the eye with his quick-twitch route running and assured hands. This didn't go unnoticed by Mitchell Tischler of the Monumental Sports Network, who noted the pass-catcher's comfort in the new offense as a positive sign.

"I thought Antonio Williams had a really nice day today. He looked comfortable in the offense and seemed to have a good sense of finding soft spots in the defense and sitting down, giving the QBs a nice target to throw to."

This cannot be seen as anything other than encouraging.

It's often a crash course for rookies during their transition to the NFL. They have to learn a new playbook, mesh with new teammates, and adapt to the higher standards at the sport's pinnacle. It's early days right now, but things couldn't be going much better.

The Commanders have some concerns in their wideout room. There isn't much legitimate production to speak of, aside from Terry McLaurin. Speculation remains rife in the media about the possibility of someone like Brandon Aiyuk or Stefon Diggs joining the ranks at some stage, but the club has not confirmed interest one way or the other.

Until then, Williams will get a chance to firmly establish himself. And he's making the most of it.

His versatility, sharpness out of his cuts, and ability to turn upfield quickly for yards-after-catch opportunities look tailor-made for David Blough's new concepts. Others in the wideout group will also fancy their chances of additional involvement, but the former Tigers star is right there fighting for his share of targets.

It's a good start, but no more than that. The Commanders' preparations for the new season are still in their infancy. Things will ramp up over the coming weeks and months, and Williams must be ready to do the same. If he can, and there is enough trust built with both quarterback Jayden Daniels and the coaching staff, a rookie breakout might not be too far behind.

There is a long way to go and a lot of hard work ahead before then, but the early signs around Williams are nonetheless immensely positive.
