By now, the consistent drumbeat of excitement and optimism surrounding Washington Commanders rookie wide receiver Antonio Williams has become impossible to ignore. Every review about him is somehow more glowing than the last, though Field Yates of ESPN's analysis may really take the cake.

Yates identified 20 players (10 offensive, 10 defensive) "selected in Rounds 2-7" of the 2026 NFL Draft who he anticipates making the "greatest immediate impact." Naturally, considering people can't seem to get enough of him, Williams made the cut.

The investment the Commanders made in Williams and his fit in the offense are enough for Yates to be bullish on the Clemson product. However, the "potential role, upside and talent" are also undeniable.

"[Williams] is an extremely experienced, savvy, pro-ready wideout who can start in the slot from Day 1," Yates wrote. "The Commanders needed receiver help alongside Terry McLaurin, and Williams will compete with players such as Dyami Brown and Luke McCaffrey for snaps. I love Williams' instincts, as he was a persistent chain-mover at Clemson."

No lies detected here. Williams was a four-year starter at Clemson who primarily lined up inside — and was quite good at it, too. He has the pedigree and skills to instantly step in as a complement to Washington's No. 1 option, Terry McLaurin.

Moreover, a lack of competition behind McLaurin should help yield quick returns, as Yates touched on. 2024 third-round pick Luke McCaffrey, 2025 fourth-rounder Jaylin Lane, Dyami Brown, Treylon Burks and Van Jefferson leave much to be desired, to say the least. Washington's unappetizing smorgasbord of unproven young guys and unheralded veterans gives Williams a chance to climb the depth chart fast.

But perhaps most notably, Williams is set to catch passes from one of the league's best quarterbacks, Jayden Daniels. Few can throw the ball as accurately and with as much anticipation as the former, specifically in the short-to-intermediate areas; that's notably where the latter thrives.

Add it all up, and it's easy to see why Yates, like many others, has high expectations for Williams right out of the gate. By virtually every account, the Commanders have landed an exciting playmaker with this year's 71st overall pick.
