Todd McShay instantly made Commanders' Antonio Williams pick look even better

This was a bold prediction.

The Washington Commanders found real value throughout the 2026 NFL Draft, according to most analysts. General manager Adam Peters had to achieve this objective with very few assets at the top end, which could help propel head coach Dan Quinn's squad to better fortunes next season.

And according to one NFL Draft insider, there is a prospect standing out above the rest as Peters' biggest heist from this selection process.

The Commanders went with defense in the first round when linebacker Sonny Styles dropped right into their laps. That was an opportunity Peters simply couldn't pass up, and he was wise to focus on a wide receiver with his next pick when Antonio Williams also fell lower than anticipated.

Todd McShay projects big things for Antonio Williams with the Commanders

Todd McShay of The Ringer was gushing in his praise of Williams, comparing him to Los Angeles Chargers wideout Ladd McConkey. The analyst was extremely high on his ability to make a smooth transition, projecting big things for the gifted pass-catcher from the moment he gets to Washington.

"I would argue that Antonio Williams is the best route runner in this class, in terms of the in and out of breaks. He does the dirty work over the middle. He accelerates out of the quick slant stuff. He gets himself open with his footwork and his precision, and he's crafty.

"I see some Ladd McConkey. Ladd may have a little bit more juice, but not a lot. I like the tough guy. I like the routes. I like that he just separates. I like that he catches the ball in some tough spots. I think he's got a chance to come in the league and get 70 to 80 catches right away."

This would help enormously. And if Williams can reach McShay's projection as a rookie, the Commanders could have a monumental steal on their hands.

It's easy to forget that Williams was touted as a potential top 15 pick before his final college campaign at Clemson. Nagging injuries prevented him from reaching his potential. The Tigers, who began at No. 1, completely capitulated en route to missing the college football playoffs entirely. But if the Commanders can build back his confidence, the third-round pick could look pretty cheap when it's all said and done.

There is a massive opportunity for Williams to make a contribution. The Commanders' receiver room has some serious questions behind Terry McLaurin. The incoming rookie might surge to No. 2 on the depth chart right away, though that could change if, or when, Brandon Aiyuk joins the ranks.

Williams has a chip on his shoulder. He's eager to silence his doubters and help Jayden Daniels. And McShay thinks superstardom could be in his immediate future.
