The Washington Commanders have a lot on the line next season. General manager Adam Peters knows it, and he won't hesitate to make the changes required if he thinks it will help the franchise bounce back.
Peters will have a better understanding of where things stand and what else could be needed after early workouts. Based on the reports that emanated from mandatory minicamp, his next move has become a little clearer.
Washington gave its young wide receivers a chance to force the issue. There were some flashes of promise, but there were also concerns. Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic was among those who noted the number of drops on the first day of minicamp, and the fact that head coach Dan Quinn singled out only Dyami Brown, Van Jefferson Jr., and undrafted rookie Jaden Bradley for praise spoke volumes.
Commanders need another veteran wide receiver before the 2026 season
The Commanders need more veteran dependability in their receiver room. That was the opinion of most fans and media members before minicamp, and it's not changed.
And now is the time for action.
Peters has cash to spend on the right reinforcements, depending on which opportunities become available and who could be the best fits for David Blough's offense. There are two names at the forefront of speculation, but nothing has become official as yet.
Brandon Aiyuk is the hottest name, but he is still under contract with the San Francisco 49ers. Most believe he will reunite with quarterback Jayden Daniels in Washington when he's eventually released. Just when that'll be is the big question nobody really knows the answer to right now.
While Stefon Diggs has made no secret about his interest in a potential homecoming, this has been one-sided so far. The four-time Pro Bowler has baggage, but he remains productive. He'd also have to accept not being the top dog with Terry McLaurin around, which might actually work well for him at this stage of his professional career.
The Commanders have stood pat so far. Peters might decide to stick with the options he has and wait for Aiyuk to become available. But with so much at stake for Washington next season, he cannot leave anything to chance.
Peters has the money to sign both Diggs and Aiyuk. Deebo Samuel Sr. is still looking for work, so re-signing him is another viable option. The Commanders needed to get younger this offseason, and they did. But there is merit to acquiring another experienced pass-catcher to help Daniels on his road to redemption.
And the sooner any new wideout gets into the building, the better.
