Terry McLaurin has been the beating heart of Washington Commanders football almost since he was drafted as a third-round steal in 2019. But now, fans should prepare for the worst after a potentially devastating injury setback.
After catching an impressive 27-yard gain on Washington's first offensive play during their Monday Night Football loss to the San Francisco 49ers, things took a dark turn for McLaurin. The wide receiver went down with a non-contact injury, and concerns were immediate after he grabbed his knee.
McLaurin was carted off the field and ruled out for the rest of the game. It seemed bad, and the reaction of the players from both sides told fans all they needed to know.
Commanders fear the worst for Terry McLaurin after concerning knee injury
Head coach Dan Quinn revealed after the game that additional tests will be done on Tuesday to determine the severity of McLaurin's knee issue. However, it doesn't look good.
Quinn also acknowledged that there "is fear" about what the results will show.
This is a hammer blow to the Commanders. McLaurin stated to ESPN sideline reporter Laura Rutledge before the game how happy he was to be healthy again after some nagging problems. Now, it seems another heartbreaking setback has emerged, which is a huge setback for everyone involved.
Jayden Daniels looked somber when discussing McLaurin after the game. The quarterback and receiver have developed a close bond, and they have helped each other through the good times and bad. All the signal-caller can do is hope for the best, but he will be there to help every step of the way.
"He's a brother to me. It sucks. You see how hard he works ... Praying for Terry. He's been there for me through a lot since I came into this league, the adverse times I went through last year and so far this year, and he's been right by my side. I love Terry and appreciate him a lot."
Terry McLaurin's absence will be sorely felt by the Commanders
Losing McLaurin for any length of time is always sorely felt. This is more concerning than anything he's dealt with in his prolific career so far, and some are even speculating that this could be the last time anyone sees him in a Washington uniform.
It's up for debate, of course. But if the worst news is confirmed, general manager Adam Peters might have to make a business decision he won't like.
That's for the future. For now, everyone will rally around McLaurin, just as he has for them during some dark times for the franchise.
McLaurin was a beacon of hope amid the constant misery, through the on-field failures to three team names and everything in between. He always punched above his weight, and when he finally got a real quarterback, the former Ohio State star earned second-team All-Pro honors while also breaking the single-season franchise record for receiving touchdowns.
Daniels and McLaurin haven't been on the field nearly enough together lately, and the Commanders have struggled accordingly. They'll just have to find ways to cope without their talisman, who'll leave a gaping hole both on and off the field.
And there's no telling where things go from here.
