Terry McLaurin is the undisputed alpha in the Washington Commanders' wide receiver room. But the second-team All-Pro is also entering unfamiliar territory for the first time in his career.
McLaurin is beloved by the fan base, but doubters are emerging. The pass-catcher isn't getting any younger, and there are new worries after missing a large part of the 2025 campaign through injury.
Those are valid to a certain extent. But everything has proceeded as planned for McLaurin this summer.
Terry McLaurin has a lot riding on Year 8 with the Commanders
After missing most of last offseason embroiled in a contract standoff with the Commanders, McLaurin lost valuable preparation time. He couldn't generate early momentum and got hurt in Week 3 against the Las Vegas Raiders. By the time he got back to anything like his old self, Washington was out of the running.
For an ultra-competitor like McLaurin, this stung.
And he's been laying the foundations to put things right this time around.
McLaurin has been a revelation. He's led from the front, looked sharp, and the chemistry with quarterback Jayden Daniels remains strong. His approach has a fresh determination, which will only improve the Commanders' bounce-back chances if he gets a better run on the injury front.
New offensive coordinator David Blough has already stated his desire to make McLaurin the focal point. He'll move around to exploit mismatches, and the Ohio State product is relishing the responsibilities coming his way.
McLaurin also has a strong supporting cast. Stefon Diggs is the best running mate he's ever had, tight end Chig Okonkwo could provide a dynamic option across the middle, and the backfield committee has enough juice to set the tone.
He also has Daniels under center. And when both were on the field together in 2024, McLaurin broke the single-season franchise record for receiving touchdowns.
Commanders will be watching Terry McLaurin closely before cap hit soars
McLaurin has a lot working in his favor. But the stakes have been raised in no uncertain terms.
The 2019 third-round pick is 31 on September 15. While McLaurin's game isn't based on speed alone, this is typically when receivers begin to regress. And even though he signed a new deal last year, general manager Adam Peters structured it so it's easy to move on from if he underperforms.
McLaurin has no more guaranteed money on his deal after this season. The cap hits on the final two years stand at $34 million and $39.5 million. That's top-tier money, so the Commanders will be expecting top-tier performances.
Anything less, and the situation becomes increasingly murky.
McLaurin won't miss that. He's a highly productive performer when fit and firing on all cylinders, so complications should be minimal. Staying healthy is key, and if Daniels can do the same, it'll be all systems go once again.
If the Commanders want to fight back this season, McLaurin needs another season of 1,000 receiving yards and potentially even double-digit touchdowns. Given Blough's intentions, the wideout could also exceed his career high in targets (134) and receptions (87) if everything goes well.
This will be the perfect way for McLaurin to answer his critics. He's been a model of consistency since he was drafted, and that hasn't changed just because of one injury-hit season where nothing much went right.
Everyone associated with the Commanders expects McLaurin to remind the world who he is.
And if he delivers, this offense will be a force.
