There is some mild concern among Washington Commanders fans after cornerback Trey Amos was placed on the physically unable to perform list to begin training camp. They are erring on the side of caution, but he is expected to be on the field when Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles rolls around.
However, that didn't stop one NFL analyst from using Amos' status to dig up an old rumor that seemed to have died down.
Matt Johnson of Sportsnaut thought the Commanders would still be a solid landing spot for free-agent cornerback Trevon Diggs. He's still looking for a new home after the Green Bay Packers cut ties, and his previous connection to head coach Dan Quinn puts Washington at the forefront of speculation.
"We know that Trevon Diggs isn’t anywhere close to the player we saw a few years ago in Dallas, but Dan Quinn has also shown that he knows how to utilize what Diggs does well. The fact that Diggs knows Quinn’s system, and there’s a path to playing time with Washington makes this a good fit for all parties."
Trevon Diggs doesn't seem like a realistic option for the Commanders
Diggs and his brother, wide receiver Stefon Diggs, have expressed interest in speaking with the Commanders about a potential homecoming. This interest has been one-sided so far, and signing veteran corner Rasul Douglas in free agency was a clear statement that this option isn't being strongly considered.
The Commanders have had the entire offseason to sign Diggs to ensure he gets a full workload before the campaign. If this were going to happen, it would have already happened.
It's that simple, really.
While Diggs was an exceptional performer at the peak of his powers, that's no longer the case. His production tailed off dramatically when Quinn left the Dallas Cowboys for Washington. Injuries didn't help, but it's an alarming trajectory that isn't going unnoticed by the NFL.
Plans can change quickly. All it takes is an injury or two to crop up over the summer for someone to take a chance on Diggs. Amos' situation is worth monitoring, but the Commanders don't seem overly concerned about his absence.
Diggs is still young enough to turn things around, but the longer he's without a club, the less likely that becomes. If there was anyone who could help him, it's Quinn, but it's also worth remembering that defensive coordinator Daronte Jones is running the defense, not the head coach.
Amos has a big role to play this season and hopefully, long into the future. The outlook is less certain for Diggs.
