Adam Peters is always working. The general manager decided that another capable veteran was needed in their cornerback room after assessing the landscape throughout early offseason workouts, and Rasul Douglas was his choice.

And a Miami Dolphins expert believes the Commanders may have stumbled into a shrewd move to improve their secondary.

The Washington Commanders reportedly signed Douglas to a one-year contract worth up to $3.8 million. ESPN insider John Keim revealed that the player's representatives had been in contact with Peters for some time, and they have now reached a compromise in good time before training camp.

Douglas will now get camp and the preseason to pick up the scheme and familiarize himself with his new teammates in Washington. And according to Brian Miller of Phin Phanatic, the veteran is well-versed in picking things up quickly and making a big impact.

Miller credits Douglas for turning the Dolphins' cornerback unit into a strength. Although the West Virginia product is on the wrong side of 30 now, he's still got the tools to be a productive cornerback. And despite Miami going through a youth movement, the expert thought they should have done more to keep him around.

"Rasul Douglas was literally signed off the street days before the regular season started in 2025. He started week one and quickly became the best corner on the roster. Douglas’ veteran knowledge made Miami’s weakest unit one of their best on defense. Douglas proved that he has the tools to still be effective in the NFL. He was one of the few free agents I wished they would have re-signed."

This should encourage Washington fans. Douglas might be behind Mike Sainristil, Trey Amos, and free-agent signing Amik Robertson right now, but don't be surprised if he does enough to earn prominent rotational reps if he transitions smoothly into defensive coordinator Daronte Jones' schematic concepts.

Something had to be done. Peters recognized it and struck with conviction to get his preferred target. Douglas bided his time this offseason, waiting for the right fit in the right situation. He's found it now, but the need to hit the ground running is crucial.

Miller's reference provides confidence this can be achieved. Douglas got no preparation time with the Dolphins before being thrown into the fire last season. He coped with the pressure effectively, standing out on a troubled unit, which is an experience that should serve him well in Washington.

Expecting miracles from Douglas is unfair. But if he can perform well when called upon and push others to reach even greater heights, that might be all the Commanders need.

If nothing else, this is a major depth upgrade. The best-case scenario? Douglas becomes an asset to the rotation and helps solidify a unit in desperate need of a spark.

Let's hope he's up to the challenge.
