Washington Commanders cornerback Trey Amos boldly claimed on his Twitch stream that he would be ready for the start of training camp. Unfortunately, the reality was far different.
And there are now quiet concerns among Commanders fans and analysts about what to expect from the 2025 second-round pick this season.
Amos flashed tremendous promise as a rookie before fracturing his fibula. He opted not to have surgery, and he's reportedly making good progress with his rehabilitation. The Commanders believe he needs a little more time before getting the all-clear to resume football activities, placing the defensive back on the physically unable to perform list before camp.

If Amos can get back to 100 percent, he promises to play an integral role this season. The Commanders have some questions to answer in their cornerback room, and they need the Ole Miss product to lead the charge. Acquiring Rasul Douglas gives them another strong insurance policy, but this unit is not going to get anywhere without the No. 61 overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Obviously, it's still July. Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles is still a while off, so there is no real need to panic right now. It would be nice to have Amos available for the entirety of camp, but it's also not the end of the world.
The Commanders can activate him off the PUP list at any time. The sooner it happens, the quicker Amos can get up to speed and the stronger he will be when the real action arrives. Anything less, and general manager Adam Peters might decide to further strengthen the cornerback unit to cover his bases.

He decided AGAINST surgery, so the timeline may be MUCH more conservative.

Any criticism of Amos is nothing more than alarmist right now. This was a serious injury, and it was always going to be a step-by-step process. Time is still on the Commanders' side, and if there are no setbacks moving forward, there is a good chance he can be in the lineup sooner rather than later.
Until then, Mike Sainristil, Amik Robertson, and Douglas will lead the way. Quan Martin could get more looks in the nickel, and Ahkello Witherspoon needs to respond after an indifferent start to life in Washington. And if anyone can get a tune out of this group, it's new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones.
The Commanders are a better team with Amos. And if they have to wait a little longer before involving him, that's a small price to pay.
