One didn't have to look far around the media to find lofty projections for Quan Martin this time last year. Fans and some respected national analysts were expecting a genuine breakout campaign from the safety in Year 3 of his professional career. To say these claims fell flat would be an understatement.

Martin's positional sense was poor. His tackling angles were awful, and the technique was just the same. Confidence gradually diminished, and the Commanders eventually took him out of the firing line late in the season to save him from any more embarrassment.
This came with inevitable speculation about Martin's future. Some were touting him as a possible trade or release candidate, but the Commanders kept him around. And that has everything to do with the introduction of new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones.
Jones' work with defensive backs is renowned. He singled out Martin for praise during his introductory press conference, believing he can make a difference within his schematic concepts. Though it's early days, the first-time NFL play-caller is reportedly deploying the former Illinois standout more in the nickel, which adds an extra layer of intrigue.
This position is familiar to Martin. He was tasked with slot cornerback responsibilities as a rookie, and flashed immense promise doing so. The Commanders moved him to the back end in Year 2, which didn't go nearly as well. Switching him back is a gamble, but it could also be the spark that brings his career to life.
It's a massive upcoming season for Martin, the last of his rookie deal. There is no chance he'll get an early extension, which should provide the urgency needed to maximize the opportunities that come his way. And if he can thrive in the nickel, that will solve a major problem for the Commanders without the need for additional reinforcements.
Washington is taking one last roll of the dice with Martin. He's got the athletic attributes to make a difference, and being in the nickel will reduce his need to place his eyes all over the field. Jones will be on hand to guide him every step of the way, but it remains a precarious situation.
