Unheralded Commanders wide receiver steps up

The Washington Commanders are hoping their wide receiver room can make the necessary improvements in 2024. Adding Olamide Zaccheaus and third-round pick Luke McCaffrey should assist, but general manager Adam Peters placed the onus on those already around under the previous regime to step up their performance levels in a more stable environment.

Kliff Kingsbury's improved schematic concepts and rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels' magnetic presence under center means there are no more excuses for this group of pass-catchers. Everyone is getting a chance to shine and there are a couple of places up for grabs on the depth chart. One unheralded player did his chances of consideration a tremendous amount of good on Day 6 of training camp practice.

Brycen Tremayne joined the Commanders in undrafted free agency last season and caught the eye enough to secure a place on the practice squad. He got another reserve/futures contract from the franchise this offseason. However, not many held out hope he'd make the 53-man roster.

His prospects look a lot better now. Tremayne's been a consistent weapon in the passing game throughout the first six days of camp. This one was his best one yet as the 6-foot-4 wideout was a nightmare to cover from start to finish.

The former Stanford star never made the most of his exceptional athletic attributes in college. Things are coming together slowly for Tremayne. Whether it's enough to make the coaching staff deviate from their original path is another matter.

If the same trend continues throughout the remainder of camp, the Commanders must get some live targets into Tremayne during the preseason. This will be the litmus test to see what the player could potentially bring to a competitive setting.

Performing well over camp is one thing, doing it in a typical game-day environment against genuine opposition all fighting for spots on their teams is another. If nothing else, Tremayne's earning the right for plenty of targets over Washington's preseason slate.
