5 critical observations from Commanders 2024 training camp Day 6
By Dean Jones
Commanders' defense creating turnovers
Creating turnovers was something the Washington Commanders' defense didn't manage effectively enough in 2023. There were many other reasons for their demise under Jack Del Rio and Ron Rivera throughout the campaign, but this concerning statistic must improve as a matter of urgency to make strides under this exciting new regime.
There's a different energy on defense this offseason. General manager Adam Peters brought in some outstanding players via free agency and the draft. Head coach Dan Quinn and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. bring a proven scheme and higher standards, which have been a revelation so far.
The Commanders are emphasizing creating turnover opportunities over training camp. It was difficult on Day 6 thanks in no small part to an improved offensive performance, but there were a couple of instances where defenders made important plays.
There were two forced fumbles throughout the session according to those in attendance. Mike Sainristil, the second-round slot cornerback who's getting starting reps immediately, punched the football out. Veteran linebacker Frankie Luvu, acquired in free agency from the Carolina Panthers, got the other.
If the Commanders can wrestle the football away from the opposition more frequently in 2024 - which wouldn't be hard all things considered - it'll make things easier for everybody. The personnel is in place to achieve this objective, but there's just no telling for sure until we see this new-look unit in a competitive setting.
Being physical and explosive is key. That's what Quinn and Whitt pride themselves on defensively. This is a sentiment echoed by his staff looking at their unrivaled enthusiasm during practice drills. And an aligned vision for the future doesn't hurt either.
That doesn't always guarantee success, but it's not a bad place to start. With high-energy performers such as Sainristil, Luvu, and others leading the charge, expectations are high this can provide the spark needed for turnovers aplenty next time around.
