Clues are already emerging in the early stages of training camp. The Washington Commanders are installing new offenses and defenses, so fans are watching more closely than ever to see how the various dynamics shake out.
But there are growing signs that cornerback Mike Sainristil's role is becoming less clear.
Felix Trammell from 1340AM FOX Sports is among those who are now questioning where Sainristil fits into defensive coordinator Daronte Jones' plans. He's getting some strong work with the first-string offense right now. But with 2025 second-round pick Trey Amos working hard for a quick return to practice, the equation is about to change.

Trammell believes that free-agent signing Amik Robertson is locked into one boundary spot. Amos is expected to occupy the other side of the field if there are no more complications on the health front. Rasul Douglas is performing well enough for a key rotational role, and Sainristil is another option for Jones to utilize.

It's a fascinating storyline to watch. However, the pieces are still coming together.
Before anyone gets too alarmist, Sainristil remains an important part of the team's defensive plans. The Commanders believe further improvements can arrive, which starts with being more consistent. Last year was too up and down, but his ability to play inside-out is something Jones can put to good use.
Sainristil won't be the odd man out by any stretch. At the same time, the raised competition for places is real.
Much will depend on how Amos looks upon returning to practice. Much will depend on what the Commanders have planned with Douglas, who's off to a good start after signing just before training camp. Robertson's role is seemingly assured, and Sainristil must also somehow fit into this puzzle.

If anyone knows how to bring more out of Sainristil, it's Jones. The Michigan product's highs are high, and the lows are low. Finding a happy medium would be a good place to start. Whether that's as a starter or a versatile part of the rotation is the big question.
The Commanders will have a plan in place to maximize Sainristil's skill set as part of Jones' aggressive, creative new system. His scheme will be predicated on athleticism, quickness, and versatility. The 2024 second-round pick has all those traits in abundance, so this is all about nurturing them effectively to ensure he does not become a weak link opposing offenses look to exploit.
And for a player like Sainristil, the plan should be relatively simple. The Commanders have to play to his strengths while finding ways to mask his weaknesses.
Sounds simple, in theory. But the player must also do his part by coming through when it counts.
Sainristil may not be the biggest dog in the fight, but he's got the heart of a lion. He'll never back down despite his physical limitations, leading former Alabama head coach Nick Saban to proclaim him as the best pound-for-pound player in the 2024 class.
High praise, indeed. But where Sainristil is concerned, the performance rollercoaster must be replaced by understated but important consistency.
Just how Jones fits him in when Amos gets back remains to be seen.
