Seismic changes were made to the Washington Commanders' linebacker room this offseason. General manager Adam Peters needed to stabilize the middle of Daronte Jones' defense with youth, energy, and athleticism. It's fair to say that the front-office leader successfully achieved this objective.

Bobby Wagner is gone. Leo Chenal was signed in free agency. The Commanders also used the No. 7 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft on Sonny Styles, who comes to Washington with a formidable reputation and lofty ambitions. With Jones planning to move Luvu back to an off-ball role, things are looking up.

What that means for Jordan Magee is undetermined.

Commanders' linebacker surplus increases pressure on Jordan Magee to improve

The 2024 fifth-round pick has flashed promise. Injuries have held him back on occasion, but the Commanders still believe there is plenty of untapped potential remaining. Even so, a massive offseason awaits the player as he seeks to cement his importance.

During a conversation with Kevin Sheehan of 106.7 The Fan, team insider Ben Standig thought Magee could fall victim to the numbers game next season. He expects him to play some, but the arrivals of Chenal and Styles could mean opportunities are at a premium.

"[Jordan] Magee's been training to be the eventual Bobby Wagner. It's very likely he's going to play, but if [Sonny] Styles plays almost every down, if he is truly the green dot guy. And then you've got [Frankie] Luvu and [Leo] Chenal, it doesn't seem like there is going to be a ton of opportunities."

This is a wake-up call for Magee. He's a Day 3 pick and a useful depth piece. But if he wants to become something more, the former Temple standout may have to wait.

Styles immediately becomes the alpha. Luvu is the inspirational leader. Chenal is the dynamic, versatile option that can add an extra sense of urgency. Magee is firmly behind this trio in the pecking order, but Jones' defense should be interchangeable enough to get some looks.

Luvu is also out of contract in 2027. If the Commanders opt not to extend him, they could push Magee into a more prominent role if he impresses enough. But for now, a lingering cloud hangs over his long-term status in Washington.

Peters was in no position to stand pat. The need for enhancements and the pressure on some in positions of power was too glaring to hold tight and wait. Competition has increased, and things look more promising. But for Magee, it's about reacting accordingly to retain his place in the team's plans.

If he can, then Magee might be a wildcard to open up the defensive options even more.
