Sonny Styles was always the Washington Commanders' guy. From his college ascension to his historic NFL Scouting Combine and everything in between, the signs were there for all to see.
General manager Adam Peters didn't think they'd have a shot at Styles. The Commanders were working along the lines of someone else scooping him up before Washington went on the clock. They got lucky, and those in power did not hesitate.
This is also where Styles wanted to be. He told head coach Dan Quinn, upon leaving their meeting, that he would hopefully see him again soon. His prophecy was fulfilled, and the second-level enforcer wasted no time in sending a message that should terrify the entire NFL.
Commanders' new rookie linebacker Sonny Styles is just getting started
During a conversation with Scott Abraham of 7News DC, Styles wasn't giving too much away about how the Commanders plan to utilize his exceptional athletic attributes. However, the incoming rookie did state that his promise is only just scratching the surface right now.
"I think there's a multitude of roles that I'll be able to do. We didn't really define that totally. I think just based on the weapons we have on defense, there's a lot of great players on that side of the ball. Wherever I can fit in to help the team the best. I feel like there's still a lot more to unlock in my game. So I'm excited they had a belief in me, and I feel the same way."
It's always Sonny in Washington!

Here is my one on one interview with Sonny Styles, the newest member of the Washington Commanders.
Hopefully plenty of "Sonny" skies ahead across the DMV region. pic.twitter.com/QVlcxFIqI0
This is precisely why the Commanders drafted him. Styles is not settling. He was a college national champion, one of the most dominant linebackers to play for the Buckeyes in some time. But make no mistake; he is constantly pushing forward.
There is no telling how many improvements could arrive working with Washington's coaching staff. Quinn's development of some of the league's most prolific linebackers throughout his glittering career needs no introduction. Styles is next in line, and he'll be striving with everything he has to repay the Commanders' faith.
Styles is an off-ball linebacker, but he's also so much more.
His previous experience in the safety spot makes him a valuable asset in coverage. There is violence and an accomplished tackling technique coming downhill. Styles's football IQ and leadership are absolutely off the charts, giving him a chance to earn the green dot as the on-field defensive play-caller sooner rather than later.
The Commanders are not betting on Styles' previous accomplishments. They are betting on what he could become. And this looks like the perfect landing spot on a defense that looks set for major improvements under new coordinator Daronte Jones next season.
And the NFL is on notice.
