The Washington Commanders strengthened their linebacking group in free agency. Off-ball linebacker is not considered one of the premium positions from a draft standpoint. But when Sonnny Styles fell into Adam Peters' lap at No. 7 overall, the general manager did not take long to turn in his card.
And now, the gauntlet has been firmly laid down heading into what promises to be a fascinating preparation period before the 2026 campaign.
The Commanders were never going to stand still. Bobby Wagner's influence was high-caliber, but his flaws were becoming more evident. Leo Chenal and Styles give the linebacker room more energy and athleticism. With Frankie Luvu and Jordan Magee also vying for important roles, the dynamic has shifted by seismic proportions.
Just the way Peters wanted it.
Commanders want linebacker competition to set the tone for defensive growth
Washington's front-office leader is all about raising the level of competition. That formed the focus of his approach this offseason, and he continued this trend by selecting Styles. This unit could now be an area of strength, and Peters is expecting a right fight for playing time before plans become finalized in the coming months.
"That room, we feel great about. We felt good about it going in (to the draft). I love the guys in that room already. They're competitive guys. They're really athletic. They're all guys that you want to have on your team.
"So, it's just adding more competition. Really, the theme of our program is competition. I know those guys will all fight and create roles for themselves, but I'm certainly happy with the makeup of that room and the talent level now."
Complacency crept into the Commanders' last season after their memorable run to the NFC Championship game. Peters and head coach Dan Quinn can blame the injury problems all they want, but reporters following the team closely could see that the vibes were different even in the summer.
That's now flipped, and anyone who doesn't display the right resolve and commitment won't last long.
The linebacker position should be the least of Washington's worries next time around. Styles is a generational athlete for the spot with the elite football IQ to be a franchise cornerstone. Chenal is another explosive presence with sideline-to-sideline impact. Daronte Jones is moving Luvu back to his preferred position: attacking downfield with tone-setting aggression and ferocity. Magee needs to turn his flashes into more consistency, but he's got the physical tools to make it happen.
Competition makes everyone better. Peters has raised it across the board throughout another major offseason overhaul. That is no more evident than in the linebacking corps, which could ignite the spark behind defensive improvements if everyone meets expectations.
Styles was a no-brainer. And it's also raised the urgency for everyone else along the way.
