It's been a luckless run for Washington Commanders defensive lineman Johnny Newton over the last three years. He's never had a full offseason to hone his craft, and the 2024 second-round pick's latest setback could be the most brutal of all.
Head coach Dan Quinn confirmed that Newton had suffered a pectoral injury. It could be long-term, and it is serious enough for the Illinois product to see a specialist in New York. If these fears are confirmed, it'll be a devastating blow to his chances of finally breaking out.
But this is the NFL. Disappointment for some means opportunity for others. And where this case is concerned, it blows the door open for an unfancied roster hopeful to finally get the opportunity he's been waiting for.
Johnny Newton injury paves the way for Ricky Barber to make Commanders' roster
There's been a lot to like about Ricky Barber's growth this summer. The interior force spent last season on the practice squad, featuring twice in the regular season. He flashed promise, too, gaining one sack and five tackles for his efforts.
Based on how Barber has taken his game forward this offseason, it's clear this experience has served him well.
The reports around Barber at training camp have been positive. The Central Florida product took this through into the preseason, emerging as one of the standout performers in Washington's success over the Miami Dolphins. It's a positive step forward, and Newton's unfortunate predicament only strengthens his chances.
Davon Payne, Javon Kinlaw, and Tim Settle Jr. are locks. Charles Omenihu is too as a rotational piece in the trenches. Deatrich Wise Jr. is a popular figure, but he hasn't practiced all offseason. After that, the cupboard is relatively bare.
That's where Barber comes in.
Ricky Barber must grasp an opportunity that might never come along again
The Commanders might decide to rely on Shy Tuttle's experience, which is a viable option. But why not take a chance on Barber if he continues to impress?
Obviously, there are a lot of unknowns.
The Commanders have to find out the severity of Newton's injury and a potential timeline for his return. Then, general manager Adam Peters needs to examine the landscape on the current roster. There is also the option to find outside help, depending on what veterans are or will be available on the open market or the waiver wire.
All those factors are out of Barber's control. He'll be hoping for the best for his teammate. At the same time, he will recognize the possible opportunity in front of him.
If he was looking for some added motivation, Barber now has it. Whether he can take advantage of it is something else entirely.
It's not ideal, especially considering the number of key injuries Washington suffered across the board during a campaign to forget in 2025. But this is all about next man up, and Barber will be striving with everything he has to make sure he's the guy to fill the spot.
And don't count him out by any stretch of the imagination.
