The Washington Commanders were expecting big things from defensive lineman Johnny Newton in Year 3 of his professional career. But after an underwhelming summer, things could now be even worse for the 2024 second-round selection.
Head coach Dan Quinn, who has been more bullish than most about Newton's outlook for the new campaign, confirmed that the Illinois product suffered a pectoral muscle injury in their preseason opener against the Miami Dolphins. The severity is still unknown, but the issue is serious enough to get a specialist opinion in New York.
Not great.
Commanders could be without Johnny Newton for a considerable period
The Commanders will wait for further developments. But the signs are not looking especially promising.
Newton was expected to be a rotational force on Daronte Jones' new 3-4 defensive front. He wasn't going to be anything more, given there are serious issues when it comes to holding his ground against the run. But in pass-rushing situations, he does flash more promise.
Now, his season is hanging in the balance. And after dealing with so many injury problems last season, the cracks are beginning to show in Washington once again.
This is precisely why general manager Adam Peters worked so hard to fortify depth this offseason. The Commanders have free-agent signing Charles Omenihu as a useful option behind the projected starting trio of Daron Payne, Javon Kinlaw, and Tim Settle Jr. Deatrich Wise could also feature, but he hasn't practiced at all throughout the offseason.
After that, Washington has Ricky Barber, undrafted rookie Jeffrey M'ba, Shy Tuttle, and Maurice Hurst II, who was signed by the club on Tuesday.
Commanders' defensive depth is already being tested due to injuries
This might be enough. But if Newton's prognosis is season-ending, Peters might want to acquire another proven veteran on the open market or check the waiver wire after final cuts.
Either way, this is a body blow for the player.
The Commanders thought they found a steal when Newton fell out of the first round and into their laps at No. 36 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. He's dealt with foot injuries over his first two years, and the performances haven't been nearly consistent enough to justify starting-caliber reps. If this pectoral problem is long-term, it'll be another devastating setback.
Some fans speculated whether Newton could be a trade candidate heading into the new season. It seemed unlikely, but if the Commanders were seriously considering it, this is now off the table.
Things haven't gone well for Newton. And if the news isn't good, it's going to take significant resolve to turn the tide.
Let's hope for good news, but the concern on Quinn's face spoke volumes.
