The Washington Commanders got their preseason off to the best possible start. While the result rarely matters at this time of year, it was encouraging to see head coach Dan Quinn's squad gain a morale-boosting triumph over the Miami Dolphins.
This followed on from joint practice, where the Commanders once again had the upper hand. The Dolphins are expected to struggle this season, and they had a poor few days. But there were still plenty of positives for Washington to take before things get a lot tougher.
The Commanders are looking to bounce back this season. Everyone raised the intensity from the moment they returned to the building, and the coaching staff's increased practice tempo had a positive impact. This trend continued against the Dolphins, which will only build confidence heading into next weekend's trip to Detroit to face the Lions at Ford Field.
Some stood out more than others. The large majority of Washington's starters didn't play, but it gave those a little further down the pecking order a chance to catch the eye. And this live-fire environment is always the best way to evaluate players.
With this in mind, here are five winners and two losers from Washington's preseason success over the Dolphins.

Athan Kaliakmanis - Commanders QB
Even though seventh-round quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis had to wait his turn, there was a lot to like about the way he applied himself. He looked comfortable enough, and the arm strength represented a real positive to take from the contest.
Kaliakmanis is streets ahead of Sam Hartman already. The Commanders believe he could become a solid backup option when Marcus Mariota departs, but even though that won't be this season, this performance gave the clearest sign yet that it will happen.
The Commanders gave Kaliakmanis most of the second half, and he made a difference. There was conviction, athleticism, and a level of comfort that defied his inexperience. There are still some things to work on, such as recognizing where the pressure is coming from, but there was far more good than bad in the Day 3 selection from Rutgers.
Washington will probably give Klaiakmanis more reps over the next two preseason games before an official judgment is made. But based on this impressive showing, it would be a big surprise if he didn't find his name on the 53-man roster.
