Debates are surging around the Washington Commanders as we get closer to the 2026 NFL Draft. It's going to be a wild, unpredictable process, especially at the top end. But one respected insider believes general manager Adam Peters is in a pretty good spot to achieve a key objective.
One doesn't have to look far for speculation linking the Commanders to a dynamic offensive playmaker. Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love and Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate are the hot names. USC standout Makai Lemon and Arizona State's Jordyn Tyson are less likely, but nothing should be completely off the table.
Even so, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network hinted that it could be a defensive prospect for Washington at No. 7, depending on what goes on in front of them.
Ian Rapoport pinpoints defensive prospects who could be on Commanders' radar
Rapoport thought the pressure to improve what became the league's worst defense last season may trump the need for more firepower around quarterback Jayden Daniels. He also thought safety Caleb Downs, linebacker Sonny Styles, and defensive end Rueben Bain Jr. are names who could be high on Washington's shortlist.
"I would not be surprised if the Commanders say, "Who is the best defensive player on our board? We will just take him."
"A couple of potential options. Caleb Downs. I would say, Sonny Styles. People love their makeup, love the way they are wired. You've got to imagine both these guys would potentially be in the conversation. Rueben Bain Jr., likely to be on the board at this time. Do the Commanders go here after adding so much to the edge in free agency? They are going to have a lot of options in a really good draft spot."

This contradicts other reports that Love is the right fit and that the Commanders are not expected to select Downs. Nobody has the first clue. And as Washington fans know, that's precisely how Peters likes it.
Peters has spoken glowingly of Styles. Head coach Dan Quinn was gushing in his praise of Downs. Rueben Bain Jr. has concerns about his arm length, and the Commanders invested heavily in their edge-rushing room in free agency. But if the front-office leader believes that is the best route, he will not hesitate to make that choice.
The intrigue is building. Nothing is guaranteed after Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza goes No. 1 to the Las Vegas Raiders. Peters admitted as much during his pre-draft media availability, and he is experienced enough to trust his board and react to what's unfolding with minimal fuss. But with no second-round pick, getting this decision right is crucial.
If that's a defensive prospect, so be it. But the Commanders better have a plan in place to give Daniels everything needed to thrive.
