Caleb Downs is one of the more hotly linked NFL Draft prospects for the Washington Commanders. Based on his college production at Ohio State, it's not hard to see why.
Some experts see the Ohio State prospect as the on-field general that Daronte Jones' defense needs to make significant improvements. Considering Downs is arguably the best overall prospect in this class, he should be on the shortlist.
Despite the hype around Downs, one NFL insider doesn't believe he will be in a Washington uniform next year, based on his conversations with sources close to the organization.
Commanders are reportedly not consider Caleb Downs, which would be a mistake
Tony Pauline of Essentially Sports revealed that speculation is rife around the league about which direction the Commanders will go. The insider revealed that an edge rusher, a cornerback, and a wide receiver are firmly in play. He didn't think Downs was among the potential candidates to be the No. 7 overall pick.
"The Washington Commanders presently hold the seventh pick in the draft, and there’s speculation on who they could choose with that selection. People close to the organization tell me a pass rusher, wide receiver, and cornerback are in play at No. 7. Most believe the team will not take Caleb Downs if the Ohio State safety is available to them."
Obviously, it's smoke-and-mirrors season across the NFL. Nobody truly knows what's going on in Washington aside from a very select few within the building. And there is also a chance Downs may not even be available when the Commanders go on the clock.
John Harbaugh made no secret of his admiration for Downs. The New York Giants could easily take him at No. 5, denying him the chance to join a bitter division rival along the way. They could also take linebacker Sonny Styles, whom general manager Adam Peters is exceptionally high on.
The point is, it's a guessing game until further notice.
Passing on Downs would be a gamble, especially if he reaches his ceiling. At the same time, the Commanders have glaring needs on offense that could take priority with their first selection. There is just no telling for sure, and reports suggest Peters is also willing to consider moving back for additional assets if the correct offer comes along.
Positional value is the only knock on Downs, especially as the medical concerns were emphatically quashed. But with very few blue-chip prospects at the top end of this year's draft, prospects like the safety and Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love may go a lot higher than people anticipate.
This report about Downs came out of left field. It remains to be seen whether there is any weight attached.
