The Washington Commanders have a pivotal upcoming decision to make at No. 7 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft. If general manager Adam Peters can find a blue-chip prospect capable of becoming a franchise cornerstone after an impressive free agency, the team's bounce-back chances will be high next season.
Peters should have several intriguing options available. It'll be a waiting game, and most have no clue how things will unfold after Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza goes No. 1 to the Las Vegas Raiders. The Commanders need to play the board effectively, and the front-office leader can't miss with no pick after the first round until No. 71.
The possibilities are endless. But it's clear that Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles is high on the shortlist.
Adam Peters made no secret of Commanders' feelings about Sonny Styles
Peters spoke highly of Styles on the Up and Adams Show, outlining his outstanding traits and how well thought of he is by everyone, from coaches to teammates. But it wasn't what he said; it was the way he lit up when saying it that got people's attention.
"He's an impressive kid. He's outstanding. We went to their pro day last week, and they probably have four guys who are going to be picked in the top 10. Sonny [Styles] fits into that category. He's big, he's long, he's fast. He's athletic. He's really smart. Great leader. He's a really good player.
"He gets those guys all lined up. All the players on their team revere him. They talk about his leadership, his ability, his football IQ. The coaches do, too. So, if you talk to anybody there, he's going to be a team captain for 10 years."

The Commanders tipped their hand on Styles. They are big fans, but whether they will get the chance to draft him is another matter.
Styles doesn't play a premium position as an off-ball linebacker. But with only one quarterback in contention for a top-10 pick, that opens things up. Mock draft projections are sketchy, ranging from No. 2 to the New York Jets to the Dallas Cowboys at No. 12. But if the Commanders get their shot, that might be his floor.
Washington added Leo Chenal to go along with Frankie Luvu and Jordan Magee in their linebacker room. This looks like a promising trio, but Styles provides a legitimate long-term, three-level force who would instantly change the team's defensive mindset under new coordinator Daronte Jones.
The Commanders could take another edge rusher if David Bailey and Rueben Bain Jr. are still around. They might examine an offensive weapon, such as wide receiver Carnell Tate or running back Jeremiyah Love. They could even trade back or select safety Caleb Downs, who is arguably the best overall prospect in this class. And who knows, maybe they'll get lucky with an Arvell Reese slide.
But if Styles is there, don't be surprised if Washington pulls the trigger.
