The Washington Commanders might be striking out on their prominent free-agent targets on offense, but it seems to be a different story on the defensive side of the football. General manager Adam Peters is allocating significant cash to fortify the league's worst unit, and his latest reported acquisition brings intrigue.
According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Commanders have agreed to terms with linebacker Leo Chenal on a three-year deal worth up to $24.75 million. This provides new coordinator Daronte Jones with another young, athletic piece who can fit seamlessly into his system. It's also a huge opportunity for the player, who could finally become a legitimate starter elsewhere.
Chenal gained massive plaudits for his efforts on the Kansas City Chiefs' rotation in recent years. The Commanders now want to see if any more untapped potential remains with more reps. And based on the skill set he brings to the table, this looks like a sound complement to what Frankie Luvu brings to the table.
Commanders add some much-needed dynamism to their linebacker room with Leo Chenal
The 2022 third-round pick out of Wisconsin has always produced when his number is called. Chenal is an exceptional blitzer from the defensive second level, which is something Jones needs as part of his new aggressive philosophy. He's a stout asset against the run and technically proficient in tackling. The player's coverage capabilities need some refinement, but at 25, there is more than enough time for additional improvements.
Chenal fits the mold of what the Commanders are seeking this offseason. He's young, ascending, explosive, and with his best years ahead of him. This gives Washington a potentially productive linebacker trio alongside Luvu and Jordan Magee, who flashed enough late last season to suggest he can be a key part of the rotation.
Though Chenal has never played more than 53 percent of defensive snaps in any of his four seasons in the league, everyone has to step up sometimes. The Commanders are giving him that shot, which is the same confidence they are placing in edge rusher Odafe Oweh after agreeing to a four-year, $100 million deal with $68 million guaranteed.
There's a chance it goes horribly wrong. But Chenal is a two-time Super Bowl winner with proven production in the highest stakes. That holds value, and who knows, perhaps he is merely scratching the surface of what he's capable of.
Time will tell on that, but this longer-term commitment represents a supreme leap of faith from the Commanders. It's Chenal's job to repay it.
