Massive changes have taken place across the Washington Commanders' defense this offseason. But for this bold plan to work, everyone must buy into the way new coordinator Daronte Jones goes about his business.
The Commanders have completely overhauled the defensive personnel. Jones has had significant input in the sort of players he wants. There will be an emphasis on youth, versatility, dynamism, and aggression. The pieces are slowly coming together, but there is a long way to go before Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles arrives.
And there is one intriguing competition that will have massive ramifications for the defense in 2026.
Commanders are planning an open competition for the green dot role on defense
General manager Adam Peters worked hard to strengthen the defensive front seven this offseason. This was especially evident in the linebacker room, with free-agent signing Leo Chenal and No. 7 pick Sonny Styles joining Frankie Luvu and Jordan Magee to form what could be a potentially prolific quartet.
With veteran Bobby Wagner no longer around and unlikely to return, youth is on Washington's side. But it leaves a gaping hole for someone to fill from a communication and leadership standpoint.
Specifically, the green dot responsibilities. And Jones is having an open competition to see who'll eventually become the on-field play-caller for his unit.

What player is going to wear it come September?
New DC Daronte Jones told me, "it will play out based on the guys competition. That's the theme of what we do here is competition. We have plenty of days to watch this competition play out." pic.twitter.com/1ybuBDLFZt
Reports emerging from OTAs indicate that Luvu is taking charge on that front. Makes sense, considering he's got the most experience and is widely respected in the locker room. Nothing is set in stone, but others will also get an opportunity to take full command in the weeks and months ahead.
In an ideal world, Styles will evolve into the long-term leader with the green dot. He's got experience doing this in college, which will make the transition smoother. There is no great rush, but his leadership, ability to communicate, and fierce desire to justify the faith shown in him by the Commanders are a good place to start.
Chenal also has a high football IQ, so he couldn't be ruled out entirely. Magee is still finding his groove, so he'd need to make significant strides to earn the playing time required.
It'll be fascinating to watch things unfold over the summer. Luvu remains the frontrunner, but Styles cannot be ruled out. Giving rookies the green dot is not the daring gamble it was in previous years. If Jones believes it's the right thing to do, he won't hesitate to put more on the Ohio State product's shoulders.
And in truth, this embarrassment of riches at the defensive second level is a nice problem for the Commanders to have.
