There is obvious concern around the status of Washington Commanders cornerback Trey Amos. Head coach Dan Quinn didn't seem particularly optimistic, claiming things would become clearer regarding a return timeline in the next week or two after suffering an ankle issue on his second practice back from a fractured fibula.
Amos' status for Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles is now in doubt until further notice. Given the injury issues throughout his brief time in the league so far, this latest concern could prompt general manager Adam Peters to take more drastic action.
And there is one obvious move that makes more sense than most.
Commanders could turn to Trevon Diggs amid Trey Amos injury concerns
Free-agent corner Trevon Diggs has been a hot rumor to Washington throughout the offseason. Quinn remains close with the player after developing a strong bond during their time together with the Dallas Cowboys, where he helped propel the player to All-Pro status. However, it's nothing more than wild speculation at the moment.
But if Diggs did get the chance to reunite with Quinn, he would probably jump at the chance.
Of course, it would also be a family reunion in Washington. The Commanders recently signed his brother, wide receiver Stefon Diggs. That only increases the allure, and Trevon texted Quinn immediately after the move was confirmed to outline what his sibling will bring to the franchise.
The connection is strong. And if the prognosis remains uncertain around Amos, the Commanders need another option capable of logging reps on the defensive rotation.
Diggs recently worked out for the Detroit Lions, but no deal arrived. His career has been in a downward spiral since Quinn left Dallas, with injuries and poor performance contributing to his demise. He's still looking for another shot, but one has to wonder if the Commanders would ever seriously consider this possibility.
They've had a chance to sign Diggs from the moment he was released by the Green Bay Packers. They haven't done so, opting to acquire Rasul Douglas, Fabian Moreau, and re-sign Antonio Hamilton Sr. instead.
But plans can change quickly in the NFL.
There are so many unknowns around Amos. It's hard to gauge just how much more time he's going to miss. But even if he does get the all-clear to resume football activities over the next fortnight, the chances of him being able to log prominent starting reps initially are low.
Diggs is no sure thing, either. He'll need time to get himself up to speed, and although there is a familiarity with Quinn, this is Daronte Jones' defense.
It's an easy pivot to make if the Commanders want to. While it doesn't seem all that likely, desperate times call for desperate measures.
But it's almost entirely dependent on what the immediate future holds for Amos.
