After months of speculation around the Washington Commanders signing another dependable veteran wide receiver to go alongside Terry McLaurin, an outcome has finally arrived.
And it's the homecoming everyone was hoping for.
According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Commanders are signing Stefon Diggs. This was always the wideout's top preference, and after general manager Adam Peters stayed in close contact throughout the offseason, he's decided that now is the time to strike.
This is exceptional news for Washington's offense and quarterback Jayden Daniels. Dependability was in short supply behind McLaurin, and Diggs changes that in an instant. And after several public pleas in the Commanders' direction, he'll now be part of their plans in 2026.
Diggs makes things happen. He is a very quarterback-friendly wide receiver, thanks to his ability to create separation and dependability in the highest stakes. He won't be the top dog in Washington; that belongs to McLaurin. But the former Maryland playmaker instantly becomes a massive upgrade at the WR2 spot for Daniels to depend on.
Getting him in now also improves the chances of learning the offense quickly and developing chemistry with Daniels. Diggs is experienced enough to get into the groove quickly. He's also been putting in the work on his own, waiting for his next opportunity.
He wanted that to be in Washington. Diggs was always intrigued by playing closer to home at this late stage of his playing career, and after a period of assessment at training camp, Peters has taken the plunge.
The Commanders' offense instantly improved, too.
Diggs may be in his career twilight, but he remains highly productive. The four-time Pro Bowler went over 1,000 receiving yards with the New England Patriots on a snap count last season, helping them reach the Super Bowl. There could be some baggage if things don't go well, but the rewards far outweigh the risks.
McLaurin gets a legitimate running mate. Daniels gets another ultra-consistent receiver. Everyone else moves a little lower down the pecking order, but the Commanders have no room for sentiment in their quest to bounce back after such a disappointing campaign.
And considering this is everything Diggs has asked for, he'll be relishing the possibility of finally wearing the famous burgundy and gold.
This signing brings significant intrigue. The Commanders now have enough firepower to cause endless problems. And if Diggs stays focused on football, it's all systems go.
After so many rumors, hearsay, and everything in between, fans now have their answer. It's Diggs, and there will be nobody happier than Daniels.
