While there is still speculation that wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk will join the Washington Commanders at some stage, Stefon Diggs is the new hot name. And based on the veteran's recent comments, he doesn't want to come alone.
Diggs hinted that both he and his brother, cornerback Trevon Diggs, are eager to see if the Commanders are interested. That hasn't been confirmed one way or the other, but the homecoming allure has seen the rumor mill surge regardless.
The brothers were talented at the peak of their powers, but there is baggage. However, one team analyst believes adding both into the mix cannot be dismissed entirely if general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn believe it will benefit the franchise.
Commanders analyst makes compelling case for both Stefon Diggs and Trevon Diggs
Kevin Sheehan of 106.7 The Fan thought signing both is something the Commanders should consider, and he is firmly on board. While there are obvious concerns, the pundit believes they could be useful short-term additions if managed correctly by Washington's accomplished coaching staff.
"For me, I'll take both of them. If Adam Peters and Dan Quinn say these guys are a plus on the field, which I think with Stefon is a given that he's a plus on the field. And we feel like whatever their issues are in a short dose, one-year environment, we can manage it, they'll be a plus for us."
It's a tricky one to figure out.
Preference would be for Stefon over Trevon. However, the Commanders are light on dependable options at receiver and cornerback. They also have the spare salary-cap space to acquire both without jeopardizing the chances of additional signings if the right opportunities arise.
Stefon Diggs was productive last season, going over 1,000 receiving yards with the New England Patriots. Now that his legal issues have been resolved, there should be interest in his services. Whether the Commanders take the plunge is debatable, but he'd be an instant upgrade on anything outside of Terry McLaurin.
Expectations would be lower for Trevon Diggs. He was an All-Pro performer under Dan Quinn during their time together on the Dallas Cowboys. Things have tailed off dramatically since, but at 27, there is still time to turn things around if he links back up with the coach who turned him into a star.
The Commanders may decide that the risks far outweigh the rewards when it comes to the Diggs brothers. But if there is conviction in the building, and they fit into what the two new coordinators have planned, then it starts to make more sense.
Watch this space, I guess...
