Nobody knows what the timeline is for Brandon Aiyuk and the San Francisco 49ers before they go their separate ways. OTAs are on the immediate horizon, and the NFC West club still has this cloud hanging over them. Both sides are dug in, and this relationship has gone way past breaking point.
The Washington Commanders are caught in the middle. Aiyuk is reportedly keen to reunite with quarterback Jayden Daniels. Adam Peters doesn't want to trade for him, but he may have no option if he wants to get the wide receiver into the building quickly.
Aiyuk has missed a lot of football. He's supposedly healthy and ready to play, but if the Niners wait right until the last minute, it'll significantly impact his ability to make an immediate contribution. Peters remains resolute in his stance, so everyone is in limbo until further notice.
Commanders believes Week 6 matchup will heighten 49ers' resolve around Brandon Aiyuk
John Keim of ESPN thought the Commanders' early-season game against San Francisco only muddies the waters further. He doesn't believe the Niners will gift-wrap Aiyuk to Washington when the two clubs meet on primetime in Week 6. He also wondered just what the endgame is with so much emotion clouding judgment.
"With Brandon Aiyuk, when is the endgame here? They don't want him on the roster to start the season, so when do they release him? And because the way the schedule is, the Niners play these guys in Week 6, do you really want to cut him now and give him a better chance to know the Commanders' playbook? Does it help them to get off to a better start?
"But on the other hand, if Washington offered them a seventh-round pick a few weeks ago, they probably would've taken it. I think people are like, okay, we've been talking about Brandon Aiyuk for three months now."
Keim is right. The whole thing has become tiresome. And if all it'll take is a seventh-round pick to end it, why doesn't Peters cough that up and rework Aiyuk's contract to make it a one-year, prove-it agreement?
It's the principle.
The Niners have Aiyuk under contract, and his roster bonus isn't due until just before Week 1. They've been stung by his actions, so even though general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan are accused of being petty, they are well within their right.
Peters knows more about the situation than most. He'll have spoken to his friends in San Francisco. He'll get Aiyuk's side of things from Daniels. But from the business side, he also knows no willing trade suitor will come forward, and the Niners will have to release him eventually.
It's a game of chicken with no end in sight. But with the Niners hosting Washington early in the season, the smart move is to wait it out and hope the Commanders change their stance. Whether that's something Peters will consider is another matter entirely.
What a mess.
