Commanders could be staring at a Dan Quinn reunion laced with danger

This is too risky in the grand scheme of things.

All the hype currently surrounds the wide receiver duo of Brandon Aiyuk and Stefon Diggs as potential Washington Commanders' incomings, with OTAs on the immediate horizon. However, some in the media are clinging to another possibility that just won't go away.

The Commanders are reportedly looking for help at receiver. Aiyuk wants to join, but he's still under contract with the San Francisco 49ers. Diggs is intrigued by the possibility of a homecoming, but there is no indication as to whether Washington feels the same.

But for one ESPN analyst, it's another Diggs that the Commanders should seemingly focus on.

Commanders urged to take another look at Trevon Diggs possibility

Matt Bowen of ESPN thought cornerback Trevon Diggs still made sense for the Commanders. He's fallen off a cliff production-wise since Dan Quinn left for Washington, but the analyst believes the head coach could still see him as a reclamation project worth considering at the right price.

"Washington could see [Trevon] Diggs as a reclamation project, helping him get back to being a true playmaker in the secondary. He has had 20 interceptions in six NFL seasons, including a league high of 11 in 2021.

"Under new coordinator Daronte Jones, Diggs can use his man coverage traits and backfield vision to get a jump on the ball in the Commanders' pressure-heavy scheme. However, he has plenty of availability concerns after spending at least a portion of the past three seasons on injured reserve."

If the Commanders were going to make this move, they'd have probably done it already. Diggs has been waiting for a new opportunity that hasn't arrived all offseason, and even though Washington could still use another productive cornerback, the Alabama product's regression is alarming.

Quinn had a profound effect on Diggs, turning him from an intriguing Day 2 pick into an All-Pro performer. The drop-off was just as drastic as the rise, so it represents a gamble despite the obvious connection between coach and player.

Of course, Quinn is not running the defense. Daronte Jones is on board, and he's been given the reins to do whatever he likes in terms of scheme and personnel. If Diggs doesn't quite fit into the Commanders' plans, this will be a non-starter.

Diggs' case is a curious one. Injuries have significantly dented his momentum, but the production was nowhere near the required standard after Quinn took the job in Washington. The Dallas Cowboys cut him loose, and he didn't make any impact with the Green Bay Packers after that. And no matter how much Quinn may like him, this slide counts for much more.

It's easy to see why these dots are being connected. Just don't expect it to go any further.
