It didn't take long for the Washington Commanders to come up among the suitors for cornerback Trevon Diggs after he was released by the Dallas Cowboys. His previous connection to head coach Dan Quinn dictated nothing else, in all honesty. That does not detract from the fact that this would be a high-risk gamble if general manager Adam Peters gave it the green light.

Diggs looked like a genuine superstar during his All-Pro campaign. That was a long time ago now, and injuries derailed his momentum considerably. Couple this with accusations about being a locker room distraction during his final days in Dallas, and a parting of the ways always seemed inevitable.

The Commanders are in desperate need of help at cornerback. Diggs would be joining a lot of familiar faces in Washington. He's also a Maryland native, so it's not hard to connect the dots. Even so, there are enough reasons to explore other targets unless there is 100 percent conviction.

Brian Mitchell questions whether Commanders should pursue Trevon Diggs

This was a topic discussed by ex-Washington star Brian Mitchell on 106.7 The Fan. He didn't think just factoring in the previous relationship factor was enough. The Commanders have to be convinced that Diggs can assist before making this move a reality.

"They have to be careful just jumping at familiarity. They need to find guys that are playing their best ball."
Brian Mitchell

Mitchell is right. Diggs played his best football under Quinn in Dallas. A lot has changed since then, and even though the former Alabama standout is firmly in his prime years, there is just no telling whether this would be a good fit when push comes to shove.

Quinn will probably be looking for a new defensive coordinator at season's end. The new hire will have his own ideas about personnel and scheme fit. Diggs may not be what he's looking for, although he'd have some strong supporters in the building.

Either way, the Commanders are in no position to be sentimental or emotional about their offseason roster construction. Washington has a lot to get through and more ground to make up than ever after a disastrous campaign. Going after Diggs for the simple reason of working with Quinn on the Cowboys carries absolutely no merit whatsoever.

If those in power believe Diggs can be an asset, especially with four-time Pro Bowl corner Marshon Lattimore being a prime cut candidate with $18.5 million in savings attached, it's a different story. If not, the Commanders should look the other way.
