The Washington Commanders were dealt a hammer blow with the injury loss of five-time Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil. And there is another anxious wait for another starter after cornerback Trey Amos' latest training camp scare.
In only his second practice since returning from a fractured fibula, Amos left early. Commanders fans were nervously awaiting further developments, but head coach Dan Quinn was not able to offer much clarity as Washington got back down to business at camp.
Quinn revealed that Amos fell awkwardly on his ankle and tweaked it during a deep route against wide receiver Terry McLaurin. The Commanders will find out more over the next couple of days regarding a potential return timeline, and everyone will be hoping for positive developments.

Any time Amos misses now is detrimental. The 2025 second-round pick has been out for months, so getting another stumbling block so soon after working hard to get back is disappointing.

The Commanders will take every possible precaution with Amos. Ankle problems have a good probability of flaring up again if they aren't given the correct time to heal. There is also a month before Washington takes the field in Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles, so there is no real urgency to bring the Ole Miss product along quickly.
It's been a luckless start to Amos' time in Washington. He showed positive flashes last season before his momentum was cut short. A soft tissue injury and now an ankle issue have been the story of his summer, but the severity is still not known.
Washington's medical staff is probably waiting for any swelling to go down before making a clear judgment. But it's not hard to figure out why there is a sense of trepidation.
Amos is expected to play a key role in new coordinator Daronte Jones' defense this season, and if he is forced to miss another considerable period, that's going to jeopardize his hopes of finding a groove before competitive action begins. The Commanders like their cornerback room, but it won't work effectively unless the No. 61 pick last year is manning one of the boundaries.

Quinn cut a visibly frustrated figure during his media availability, and with good reason. Losing someone with Tunsil's credentials is bad enough, but if the prognosis is not positive with Amos, that would be a double gut punch at the worst possible time as the Commanders look to bounce back this season.
All Quinn can do is wait like the rest of us. But if anyone deserves a little bit of luck on the health front, it's Amos.
Let's hope he gets it with an encouraging update on his status in the coming days. Otherwise, the Commanders have got a real problem on their hands.
