Commanders risk turning Luke McCaffrey into the wrong kind of answer

It's a risky plan.

There is a lot to work through in the Washington Commanders' wide receiver room. They have Terry McLaurin, but not much else in terms of dependability. Rumors are swirling about another productive performer joining the franchise at some stage, but nothing concrete has emerged as yet.

Hopefully, one of the young hopefuls breaks out. They will all get their chance in the weeks and months ahead. Whether they can build enough confidence to take on more responsibilities is another matter.

And for one NFL analyst, the presence of Luke McCaffrey in a projected starting spot is a poor reflection of the way general manager Adam Peters has handled recruitment in this critical area of the field.

Luke McCaffrey must prove worthy of a starting role with the Commanders

Douglas Fritz of ClutchPoints thought neglecting the receiver unit could be grounds for termination for both head coach Dan Quinn and Peters. And he also mentioned two possible upgrades that have been heavily linked to the Commanders in recent weeks.

"If [Luke] McCaffrey is the best the Commanders have for the No. 2 wide receiver, the prediction is easy. [Dan] Quinn will be a defensive coordinator with another team next year. And [Adam] Peters will be looking for an assistant GM role outside of Washington.

"The most obvious way the Commanders could get out of the McCaffrey hole is by signing a free agent. Stefan Diggs and Brandon Aiyuk are both available. Either presents an upgrade over McCaffrey."

This is a little harsh on McCaffrey. Opportunities have been in short supply, but the 2024 third-round pick does get open. Within schematic concepts that should better suit his strengths, hopes are high that his influence in a competitive setting will increase in Year 3 of his professional career.

Brandon Aiyuk and Stefon Diggs have achieved more, especially the latter. They would also bring considerable baggage. And in the former Arizona State star's case, he is still under contract with the San Francisco 49ers until further notice.

McCaffrey cannot do anything about pending moves or swirling speculation. His primary focus is on improving, taking advantage of opportunities as they arise, and fully immersing himself in David Blough's new system. If he can do this, everything else should take care of itself.

Nobody is expecting McCaffrey's roster spot to be in jeopardy, given he was playing like a Pro Bowl kick returner last season before breaking his collarbone. But after two years to fully acclimatize to the NFL, this is the time to step up in the offensive rotation.

If not, Peters must pivot accordingly.
