The Washington Commanders' wide receiver room has been discussed ad nauseum throughout the offseason. However, the inability to secure a legitimate No. 2 option opposite Terry McLaurin could come back to haunt general manager Adam Peters.
This contentious topic was discussed in greater detail by Eva Geitheim of Sports Illustrated. The analyst thought the Commanders may rue this path above all else if things don't go as expected this season, though she acknowledged things could change quickly if someone like Stefon Diggs or another veteran wideout comes on board before Week 1.
"The Commanders went into free agency with many, many needs, and hit on a number of them, from edge rusher to linebacker and the secondary. The area they did not address was securing a No. 2 receiver.
"The Commanders still have a No. 1 wideout in Terry McLaurin and could pursue free agent options such as Stefon Diggs, but they will go into 2026 lacking the ideal complement out wide."
It's not hard to see why Geitheim came to this conclusion.

The Commanders are desperately short of dependability at receiver. McLaurin's credentials need no introduction, but there are severe concerns about the rest. Perhaps the scheme implemented by offensive coordinator David Blough could help, but for this bold plan to come off, one of the young breakout hopefuls or reclamation projects has to step up their game.
Peters is always in evaluation mode. This will be a position group everyone will be keeping a close eye on over the early stages of training camp. The Commanders have the financial flexibility to add another weapon, with $43.7 million in available cap space. It's an ever-changing landscape, but Washington's front-office leader will act quickly if he believes more is needed.
While he's come in for criticism over this predicament, it's not like Peters hasn't been looking.
The Commanders went big-fish hunting in free agency with Alec Pierce, but he decided to stay with the Indianapolis Colts. Washington then turned its attention to Romeo Doubs, but he joined the New England Patriots instead. Speculation has been rampant around Brandon Aiyuk joining the ranks when he is eventually released, but his actions on social media have turned fans off from the possibility.
Van Jefferson Jr., Dyami Brown, third-round pick Antonio Williams, and undrafted rookie Jaden Bradley are the only new signings with a real chance to stake a claim. Luke McCaffrey, Treylon Burks, and Jaylin Lane have upside but are relatively unproven. Tight end Chig Okonkwo and running back Rachaad White will help in the passing game, but whether that's enough remains to be seen.
There is a lot on the line for Washington this season. At the same time, Peters isn't going to sign anyone just for the sake of it.
But make no mistake; this is a fluid situation that could change at any moment.
