He'll reportedly be available, but will the Commanders make a bid?

If he ends up leaving the Green Bay Packers via free agency, wide receiver Romeo Doubs’ time with the club will be looked upon with mixed emotions.

The Packers selected the Nevada product in the fourth round of the 2022 draft. Given that mid-tier pedigree, his numbers with Green Bay — 202 receptions for 2,424 receiving yards and 21 touchdowns — represent some very solid value.

Yet, there will still be a lingering feeling that Doubs could have and should have been bigger than he was. Perhaps that will come true with a different team in 2026. And that could be the Washington Commanders.

Romeo Doubs could be on the market if Commanders want to take the plunge

Matt Schneidman of The Athletic reported that Doubs was “as good as gone in free agency.” This isn’t a shock. After his best year as a pro in 2025, it was always going to be tough for Brian Gutekunst to work out a new deal. Recent social media posts from Doubs and some of his teammates read like goodbyes.

If and when he does hit the market, Doubs will certainly draw interest from receiver-needy teams. The Commanders would be a logical suitor.

At 6-foot-2 and 204 pounds, Doubs offers an excellent combination of size and speed. Though not a true burner, he has many of the skills NFL teams covet in a receiver.

Doubs was a high school running back, making him dangerous with the football in his hands. He has good hands and runs good routes. He has never demonstrated any single elite talent, but he does everything well.

The wideout was part of a drafting spree begun in 2021 that was designed to replenish the Packers’ receiving corps for then-quarterback Aaron Rodgers. They selected seven receivers from 2021 to 2023. Christian Watson, who went two rounds earlier than Doubs in 2022, was projected to be the serious deep threat who might help replace Davante Adams.

It was Doubs who initially turned heads. He generated plenty of buzz as he seemed to build an instant rapport with Rodgers. But things just never took off the way Packers’ fans hoped. The pass-catcher was good, but he was never great.

Green Bay added Jayden Reed, who immediately made an impression. His 2025 injury, against the Commanders in Week 2, opened the door for Doubs and may well have sealed his departure.

Without Reed, Doubs finally led the Packers in receiving in 2025 and showed he could take on a bigger role. That may have put him out of Green Bay's price range.

Current projections suggest Doubs could get around a four-year, $48.01 million deal. That would make him an affordable second option on a Washington team with a clear WR1 like Terry McLaurin.

Though he is not exactly a carbon copy of Deebo Samuel Sr., Doubs would appear to be a very good complement to McLaurin. He could line up outside in a traditional Z receiver role, but also has the versatility to shift around as needed.

There will be bigger, higher-priced names on the market this offseason. Even so, Doubs could be the type of sneaky mid-level signing that general manager Adam Peters used to rebuild his roster in 2024.

Adding him to a group of talented but unproven young wideouts like Jaylin Lane, Luke McCaffrey, and Treylon Burks (if re-signed) would give Washington a little more proven production to play alongside McLaurin in 2026.

If Doubs taps into the potential that he showed in flashes throughout his four years in Green Bay, he might emerge as a key part of the Commanders’ passing attack for years to come if Peters takes the plunge.
