Commanders' dream $48M target just edged closer after subtle goodbye

The Washington Commanders have a lot to get through on the personnel side this offseason. Much of the focus centers on the defensive overhaul expected once a new coordinator is hired, but general manager Adam Peters cannot overlook the offensive weapons around Jayden Daniels before a crucial third year for the dynamic quarterback.

There are a lot of unknowns here, too.

Terry McLaurin will be the focal point, and hopefully, he can stay healthy next time around. Luke McCaffrey and Jaylin Lane are exceptional returners but remain unknown quantities in the passing attack. After that, the cupboard is bare unless extensions are agreed upon.

One of the most pressing topics is the future of Deebo Samuel Sr. The versatile wideout proved to be a useful addition for nothing more than a fifth-round selection. However, he is on the wrong side of 30, and giving him another deal won't be cheap.

Keeping him around makes sense for the right price. At the same time, the All-Pro knows that this is his final opportunity to gain a lucrative deal either in Washington or elsewhere.

Commanders could have their chance to acquire Romeo Doubs in free agency

It'll be interesting to see what unfolds, but Peters should be making contingency plans. And it sure sounds like one possible free-agent target just said goodbye to his current employers on social media.

Romeo Doubs' rookie deal with the Green Bay Packers is up. He ended on a high note with a sensational display in their wild-card round playoff defeat to the Chicago Bears. Even so, it wasn't hard to read between the lines of his latest Instagram post, which seemed like a montage of his time with the NFC North club before taking his chances elsewhere.

This should put the Commanders on high alert. Doubs is young and ascending. He's coming off a campaign where he achieved career highs across the board. And even though he has never come close to reaching 1,000 receiving yards, he's never been a legitimate No. 1 or No. 2 option for long, either.

According to Spotrac, Doubs is expected to command an annual salary of $12 million on a four-year, $48 million deal. Washington has more than enough cash available to make him a decent offer, and getting the chance to continue his career catching passes from Daniels is another strong selling point.

Doubs is a physically imposing receiver who makes life difficult at all three levels of the field. Adding him to the group may give Treylon Burks a chance to fill the void left by Samuel. He was compared to the player more than any other during the pre-draft process, and the ex-Tennessee Titan flashed enough when called upon over the second half of 2025 to warrant further investigation.

As for Doubs? It seems as if his time in Green Bay has run its course. The Commanders wouldn't be alone in coveting the pass-catcher, but they could very well shoot their shot once the legal tampering period commences.

Time will tell...
