The Washington Commanders have been constantly linked with another veteran wide receiver throughout the offseason. And according to one respected NFL insider, the tipping point for general manager Adam Peters is fast approaching.
During a conversation with The Team 980's Kevin Sheehan, ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler said the Commanders were going to survey their receiver landscape when training camp rolls around. That moment has arrived, which could mean things will become clearer about this long-running topic over the next week.
Which way it'll go is the big question.
"When I checked in on Washington's receiver outlook, I was told: "Hey, we're dusting our hands of this until camp." Maybe we're getting close to getting a resolution on that. Getting a little bit of clarity, which would be good.
"They don't have to say anything. They don't have to make any sort of declaration. It helps them to keep their plans in the dark a little bit. I do think in the next week some of their plans will become crystallized because they have to."
Commanders have bided their time amid wide receiver rumors, but the clock is ticking
Training camp may have been a soft deadline, at least according to Fowler. But there is nothing to suggest Peters will just make a move for the sake of it. Certainly not because of a report nor the persistent rumors linking Washington with every big-name wideout still looking for work.
The more likely scenario centers on Peters and Washington's coaching staff seeing how the wide receivers perform over the opening stages of camp. If they play well, the Commanders might do nothing. If they cannot meet expectations, that's when another dependable option will be considered.
Stefon Diggs. Brandon Aiyuk. Even the likes of Keenan Allen and Tyreek Hill have been touted as potential options for the Commanders. They carry risk, and aside from the erratic San Francisco 49ers pass-catcher, they are short-term fixes.
Peters wants to trust the youth behind Terry McLaurin, which is the best route to a sustainable future. But with a lot on the line for Washington in 2026, head coach Dan Quinn needs as many sure things as possible.
Hopefully, the Commanders will provide some clarity to their fan base soon. Peters isn't known for revealing plans ahead of time, but one would think a move needs to happen quickly if Washington is going in this direction.
The longer any new arrival has to pick up offensive coordinator David Blough's scheme and develop chemistry with quarterback Jayden Daniels, the better. Waiting longer might complicate matters, but finding the right guy is just as important. Because there is a fine line between success and failure.
Washington found that out to its cost last season. Peters cannot make the same mistake again.
