Rachaad White turned down offers from elsewhere to join the Washington Commanders this offseason. And while it's still early days, the running back is already making a big impression.
White has a previous connection to quarterback Jayden Daniels from their time together at Arizona State. The Commanders have a surplus in their running back room, but the veteran is catching the eye enough for a strong role in 2026. Offensive coordinator David Blough will likely deploy a committee approach. Even so, the new arrival should feature prominently.
NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo is hearing nothing but positive vibes around White's outlook after visiting Washington's facility for the final day of mandatory minicamp.
Rachaad White continues to gain widespread praise after Commanders switch
Edge rusher K'Lavon Chaisson was another name that came up, but Garafolo believes Blough's offense looks well-suited to White's skill set as he looks to secure a bigger payday in Washington or elsewhere next spring.
"Rachaad White and K’Lavon Chaisson were two names that came up a few times during my visit to Commanders minicamp yesterday. Both on one-year deals with a chance to set up free agency again next year. David Blough’s offense should suit White well."
The Commanders signed White to a one-year, $2 million deal with $1.71 million in guaranteed money. He probably could have received more at another club, but reuniting with Daniels was just too tempting to ignore.
White no doubt looked at Washington's other backfield options and fancied his chances of being a focal point. He's got the speed, sharpness, blocking, and pass-catching that could be highly useful. Unlike some looking for their fair share of carries, he has also come encouraging previous production to call upon.
There will be tougher challenges ahead. White knows how to prepare effectively, and it would be a big surprise if he didn't build on this positive start at training camp. But in all honesty, for players like this, getting it done in the regular season is all that matters.
The dual-threat joining Washington went completely under the radar, certainly compared to other high-profile signings around the league. But if White has the impact expected, this could quickly become one of the biggest bargains of free agency when it's all said and done.
White is aiming to make this scenario a reality. He's brimming with confidence and believes in the project. If this translates to a solid year, there will be a lot more dollars on his demands when the 2027 offseason gets here.
And the Commanders would be wise to pay up.
