Adam Peters was under enormous pressure to deliver the goods this offseason. The Washington Commanders' general manager has met the targets so far. There is also plenty of cash still to splash in the short term.
And the contract details around running back Rachaad White's arrival are another example of the impressive way Peters has gone about his business so far.
Peters has been aggressive and calculated in equal measure. He's rightfully prioritized defense, bringing in several new faces who should all contribute. The front-office leader also signed tight end Chig Okonkwo before reuniting quarterback Jayden Daniels with his former college teammate.
Commanders are getting Rachaad White for an absolute bargain
White always hinted that the Commanders would be his preferred landing spot. He's got a close connection to Daniels from their time together at Arizona State. Looking at the details of this agreement, it's clear he's also accepted a little bit less to land in Washington.
According to Greg Auman of FOX Sports, the Commanders have given White a one-year deal for $2 million, which could rise up to $4 million with incentives. Considering how impactful the dual-threat weapon could be in David Blough's new offensive system, this has all the makings of an absolute steal.
Details of the deal were met with almost bemusement across fan bases league-wide. White has the scope to be a genuine difference-maker in a featured role, as evidenced by going over 1,500 yards from scrimmage in 2023. This is the perfect complement to Jacory Croskey-Merritt, who should still have a role to play after his outstanding rookie exploits.
While his inability to gain yards between the tackles came in for criticism with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Commanders will have a plan to maximize White's strengths. And if everything goes according to plan, the player can expect a more lucrative commitment in Washington or elsewhere when the 2027 offseason rolls around.
The Commanders could still use a more physical backfield presence, but Daniels' comfort with White almost guarantees he'll be a feature. It's an important campaign for the signal-caller, who becomes extension-eligible in 2027. Having this already developed chemistry is only going to help the offense take off when competitive action begins again.
There is more hard work ahead for Peters. The Commanders need another center and left guard if Chris Paul signs elsewhere. They need more explosiveness in the wide receiver room after Peters missed out on Alec Pierce and Romeo Doubs. But with White, they have a security blanket on passing downs who is capable of breaking off big yards in Blough's projected zone-blocking system.
And for the money involved, it was an absolute no-brainer.
