It was a busy offseason for the Washington Commanders. General manager Adam Peters knew a roster revamp was required after a five-win campaign, and this objective was achieved through an aggressive free agency that boosted starting spots and depth considerably.
And for one high-profile signing, he is already looking like a steal of epic proportions over the early stages of organized team activities.
Washington wasn't going to stand pat in the running back room. Jacory Croskey-Merritt's rookie surge was immensely encouraging, but the seventh-round pick couldn't do it alone. When Chris Rodriguez Jr. left for the Jacksonville Jaguars, the need became even greater.
Jeremy McNichols was re-signed. Jerome Ford came on board, and there is intrigue around sixth-round selection Kaytron Allen as a powerful force in between the tackles on early downs.
Rachaad White is making his presence felt early at Commanders OTAs
The free-agent arrival of Rachaad White also factors into the equation. He turned down offers from elsewhere to reunite with his former college quarterback, Jayden Daniels. It's a one-year, $2 million deal for the Arizona State product, which indicates a willingness to bet on himself in pursuit of a longer-term commitment in Washington or elsewhere next time around.
White wasted no time in catching the eye on Day 1 of OTAs. His dual-threat prowess was put on full display as Croskey-Merritt sat out the session as a precautionary measure. Mitchell Tischler of the Monumental Sports Network was among those in attendance. He was blown away by the player's speed, and the reporter believes this could be a key cog in David Blough's offense when it's all said and done.
One of my biggest takeaways today was how was 💨fast 💨 Rachaad White looked. I'm starting to get early vibes he's gonna eat in this David Blough offense pic.twitter.com/OBey0aWsDt

The Commanders will likely deploy a committee approach in the backfield. They have the options to do so, which keeps everyone fresh and limits the risk of injuries. But White's athleticism, previous production, and already-developed chemistry with Daniels could see him emerge as the top dog.
That's a lofty bar to aim for, but White has not come just to make up the numbers. He is ambitious, hungry, and eager to maximize the opportunity in front of him. There is a long way to go and a lot of hard work ahead, but the signs are firmly pointing up.
White was a victim of circumstance with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He fell down the pecking order thanks to Bucky Irving's surge. But with his ex-teammate's status under a cloud due to injury, the NFC South club may be regretting their decision to let him walk in favor of Washington.
It's early days, but Tampa Bay's loss will be Washington's gain if White continues on a similar trajectory over the summer.
