Antonio Williams defies the chaos in Commanders' joint practice disaster

By all accounts, it was a miserable joint practice for the Washington Commanders, who were outfought and outclassed by the Baltimore Ravens.

But amid the disappointment, concerns, and wayward momentum this club is going through right now, a few shining lights emerged. None more so than rookie wide receiver Antonio Williams.

After going through a typical transition period this summer, Williams is now starting to find his feet. Everything seems to be clicking, and his influence is growing.

His preseason performance against the Detroit Lions was a major highlight of an otherwise underwhelming contest. Williams carried this positive form into joint practice, raising optimism further about what he could bring to the offense in Year 1 of his professional career.

Williams' sharp route running and hand manipulation had the Ravens' defensive backs toeing a merry dance in 1-on-1 drills. All-Pro safety Kyle Hamilton couldn't keep up, and even though the offense struggled to get anything going in 11-on-11, there was one notable highlight with the Clemson product at the forefront.

With quarterback Jayden Daniels under pressure, which he was constantly behind a porous offensive line, the signal-caller rainbowed a beautiful ball downfield that was expertly brought in by Williams, rounding off another impressive practice for the No. 71 overall selection in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Nobody else got much joy. But Williams found a way to make something happen.

That is significant.

Things are not going to go your way all the time. The NFL is brutal; it takes no prisoners, and it takes tremendous resolve to make a success of things.

It's early days, but it looks like Williams is made of the right stuff.

This isn't an isolated incident, either.

Teammates and coaches have raved about Williams almost from the moment he got into the building. His route-running, body control, and overall sharpness have been a breath of fresh air. And despite four-time Pro Bowl wideout Stefon Diggs' high-profile arrival during training camp, the first-year pro should still have a role to play.

And an important one.

These are all positive steps for Williams. There will be growing pains, and there won't be any real pressure to become a focal point with Diggs and Terry McLaurin around. But if he continues this encouraging growth, the third-rounder will get enough opportunities to make plays in the regular-season pressure cooker.

If he can seize them, the sky is the limit.

The Commanders thought they got a steal in Williams. He was touted as a first-round pick before injuries and Clemson's freefall last season saw his stock slide considerably. That gave him a big chip on his shoulder, and Washington provided the platform to make an immediate difference.

He's taken full advantage so far.

While much bigger tests are coming for Williams in the regular season, he looks firmly cemented as the WR3 behind McLaurin and Diggs. And who knows, perhaps he can become even more than that over time.

That's for the future. But for now, it's so far, so good for Williams as he looks to make his pre-draft doubters look foolish.
