After months of speculation, the Washington Commanders have added an All-Pro to their wide receiver room. Stefon Diggs is back home in the DMV, and it's a great fit for everybody.
Diggs' arrival immediately changes the entire complexion of Washington's offense. Where quarterback Jayden Daniels' array of weapons looked like a weakness without a proven No. 2 wideout, he now has two reliable targets and a plethora of young receivers who could step up beyond them.
Of those youngsters, one in particular sits in a position to benefit greatly from Diggs' presence both on and off the field.
Stefon Diggs' arrival could help Antonio Williams grow with the Commanders
There were some character-related red flags regarding Diggs, even beyond his publicized legal troubles. Everybody knows the type of personality he is; he's a player who is going to demand the ball a lot and make his displeasure known if he doesn't get it.
Despite his 12 years of NFL experience, he's probably not the ideal mentorship figure for long-term building blocks such as Antonio Williams or Luke McCaffrey. But the tide turned last season with Diggs.
He reportedly emerged as a strong leader and mentor last season on the New England Patriots, emerging as the model teammate and barely putting a foot wrong. If the same player shows up in Washington, Williams would be wise to hang on his every word.
Williams has the talent. He now has two top-level performers in Diggs and Terry McLaurin to lean on for advice, counsel, and some extra nuances that can help take his game to another level.
Learning behind Diggs could be a blessing in disguise for Williams. It means he won't be forced into a role beyond his present-day capabilities in his first NFL season, and he'll be able to develop with patience and grace under Washington's coaching staff.

Williams will also play more of a slot role due to Diggs' arrival as opposed to being thrust into the competition for WR2 duties. That's where he's most comfortable based on his college experience at Clemson, and it should make his transition into the pro level much smoother.
In the long run, this is exactly what a player like Williams needs.
Diggs is only on a one-year deal and probably won't be back in Washington next season. By that point, the Commanders will be counting on their third-round pick to take the next step, and if all goes according to plan, he should be ready.
This is precisely how you want to bring a young player along.
It's not at all the same situation as last year, when McCaffrey and Jaylin Lane were held back because of head coach Dan Quinn's infatuation with journeymen like Noah Brown, Chris Moore, and Robbie Chosen. Instead, Washington has added a player who eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards and was the top option on a Super Bowl roster last season.
And in 2027, it will be Williams' turn.
In one move, the Commanders' wide receiver unit went from a weakness to a strength. That's not to say Williams cannot make a difference in Year 1, but the long game is just as important.
