The Washington Commanders will no longer have to worry about wide receiver A.J. Brown twice a season. This expected bombshell may also create a ripple effect, increasing the urgency to find another productive veteran pass-catcher for quarterback Jayden Daniels to depend on.
Specifically, Stefon Diggs.
Brown has tormented the Commanders since joining the Philadelphia Eagles four years ago. He bullied first-round cornerback Emmanuel Forbes Jr. so much that his confidence never recovered. He got the better of four-time Pro Bowler Marshon Lattimore and everyone else. Washington could not find an answer, so there was no doubt a few smiles in the building when his trade to the New England Patriots finally became official.
Commanders are on the clock with Stefon Diggs as WR options dwindle
This adds to the veteran wideouts who have been picked up in recent days. The New York Giants signed Odell Beckham Jr., JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Braxton Berrios. Though most see these moves as desperation, it's a sign that the wheels are now turning again after June 1.
Diggs has made no secret of his desire to speak with the Commanders now that his legal issues have been resolved. He's in no rush, but general manager Adam Peters has not moved. This could mean he's not interested, or that he wants to get a good look at the young options behind Terry McLaurin before deciding whether more is needed.
Brandon Aiyuk's potential arrival at some stage is also generating plenty of hype. He's still under contract with the San Francisco 49ers, while Diggs is available right now. But even though the wideout is enthused by a homecoming, he will not wait around forever.
The dominoes are falling around the NFL. Teams won't want to be caught short, and Diggs is now arguably the best remaining option on the free-agent market. If interested suitors are happy enough with the baggage they would be taking on, it might not be much longer before he finds a new club.
Fans who were initially skeptical have warmed to the idea of Diggs' possible arrival in Washington. The Commanders are reportedly looking for help at receiver, but they are clearly biding their time. Money isn't an issue, so it's a case of finding the right fit who can help on the field and add to the locker room culture built so successfully by head coach Dan Quinn.
That may be Diggs, but it may not. If the Commanders are intrigued, which is no guarantee by any stretch, they need to act quickly.
Legitimate options are dwindling by the day. And Diggs may be the next one to go.
