Brandon Aiyuk pours gasoline on Commanders rumors with subtle message

A message, perhaps?

Everyone is latching onto any rumor or development around wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and his possible switch to the Washington Commanders this offseason. Nothing seems imminent, but that hasn't stopped fans from connecting even the faintest dots.

Aiyuk is not averse to stirring the pot, either. And all it took was one press of a social media button to send shockwaves through the fan base.

Eagled-eyed San Francisco 49ers reporter David Lombardi from the San Francisco Standard noticed something different when browsing Aiyuk's Instagram account. He was following three people, not his typical two. His wife and quarterback Jayden Daniels were still there. But the wideout has now started following Washington's account, too.

As expected, the frenzy didn't take long to arrive. Fans immediately saw this as a sign that something might be sorted sooner than expected. The reality might be disappointing, but it probably confirmed what they long suspected about this drawn-out saga.

Aiyuk wants to join the Commanders and isn't particularly interested in anyone else. He's come this far, cutting off all contact with the Niners and supposedly refusing to speak with other interested suitors about reworking his contract, according to ESPN insider Adam Schefter. It's a bold stance, but it would instantly change if general manager Adam Peters came calling.

Just when that will be is anyone's guess.

The Niners remain resolute, refusing to release Aiyuk in the hope of finding a trade partner. Peters is reportedly unwilling to send over a late-round pick, knowing San Francisco will have no option but to release him at some stage. But if he wants to get him into the building before the end of August, it might be worth shifting his stance.

The former Arizona State star knew what he was doing. Aiyuk knows there are eyes on him, and his every move is being analyzed. This is a clear message without saying a word, and it's only raised excitement among Commanders fans around his potential reunion with Daniels.

Whether it's tomorrow, before training camp, or just before Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles, all signs point to this scenario becoming reality. Aiyuk is no sure thing after missing so much time due to injury, but if he can get back to anything like his old form, it will help Washington's offense considerably.

Players are using social media as a powerful tool more than ever. Aiyuk is staying silent in the media, which is the right call. But this was the clearest sign yet of his eventual desire.

And it did not go unnoticed.
