It’s been a unusually long offseason for Redskins football. But it will come to a close soon.

Perhaps it’s gone by so quickly because of the heightened excitement for the Redskins’ 2018 season. Optimism certainly is brewing in D.C. The team’s defense appears to be stout where it hasn’t been in years past. The offense has elite potential with a vast allotment of playmakers, led by an efficient point guard in Alex Smith. And the coaching staff returns virtually untouched from the 2017 season, ready to build on the progress that has been made.

Until the season starts, however, this progress, this excitement, and all this positive speculation exists without merit. It doesn’t matter how solid the roster looks on paper, or how confident the coaching staff is. The team needs to go out and prove it on the field.

Unfortunately, Washington, along with 31 other teams, will have to wait a bit for that opportunity. Training camp comes first. It marks the end of the NFL’s long, quiet vacation period. But it is not quite the beginning of football. Not yet.
